This song is about not listening to the doubters and trying anyway. Believe in yourself, that you can accomplish anything.
TRY, TRY, TRY! You never know what you do if you don't try. If you simply go along with the crowd, you won't amount to much.
The song is posing the question what sort of person would you rarther be a "fish who cant write his name or read a book" or "Would you rarther swing on a star" "become better off than you are". Bing is saying what would you rarther be foolish or Famous.
I dont think it has to do with being famous. But rather just improving your self and being all that you can be.(nevermind the army quote)
