Dakota Lyrics

Thinking back, thinking of you,
Summer time think it was June,
Yeah I think it was June.
Laying back head on the grass,
Chewing gum, having some laughs,
Yeah having some laughs

You made me feel like the one,
You made me feel like the one,
The one

Drinking back drinking for two,
Drinking with you,
When drinking was new.
Sleeping in the back of my car,
We never went far,
We wouldn't need to go far

You made me feel like the one,
You made me feel like the one,
The one

You made me feel like the one,
You made me feel like the one,
The one

I don't know where we are going now,
I don't know where we are going now

Wake up, cold coffee and juice,
Remembering you, what happened to you.
I wonder if we'll meet again,
And talk about life since then,
And talk about why did it end

You made me feel like the one,
You made me feel like the one,
The one

You made me feel like the one,
You made me feel like the one,
The one

I don't know where we are going now,
I don't know where we are going now

So take a look at me now!
So take a look at me now!
So take a look at me now!
So take a look at me now!
So take a look at me now!

Just to clear things up, it's about someone reflecting on his first real relationship.

The first verse is about him remembering them going out and having fun throughout the summer.

The chorus says how special she made him feel.

Second verse is about drinking alcohol (the lyrics: "When drinkin' was new" proves that they must be young, as most people drink for the first time in there teens). The "we never went far" part is supposed to be taken two ways:

  1. they didn't drive far,
  2. they didn't have sex, or do many things together (as your first relationships tend to be quite boring).

After the second chorus, he gets dumped, and doesn't know what to do (whether to be friends with her, try again in a relationship, ignore her or move on), basically, he's confused.

The third verse is him remembering her, and wondering what went wrong, wondering where she is in life now, and wondering if they could of worked things out again, instead of ignoring each others feelings.

He's still confused and doesn't know what to do about her, but he moved on to better things, and improved.

Overall, the whole song is someone reminiscing good times he had with his first love, presumably called "Dakota", what a song as well :) just went through the exact same thing (summer relationship, i'm 16), hope i cleared things up for everyone :P

Song Meaning

Great perspective (and a correct one) on the song, nice to see young people that are still emotional.

You have done a great job interpreting this song. The one thing I get from the song that I didn't see in your interpretation is that he is relaying the story years later, maybe after ending another relationship. He is looking back to a simpler time and what he feels (though the cloud of his current pain) was a more true and pure love.

A guy I love so much gave me this song to me, we were summer vacation love but few years later every now and then he will send me love songs, which breaks my heart despite we were summer vacation love I think we could have worked things out since we were so perfect and crazy about each orher. It's been 6 years and I am married to somebody else yet I still looking for closure from him since he never gives me any type of clousure. It seems like he is playing with my feelings, I told him...

omg!not one comment yet!forshame!!Anywayz...in my opinion i think that it's about a relationship that's ended and Kelly's recalling memories from it"Laying back head on the grass, Chewing gum, having some laughs,"and what he'd say to that girl if they ever meet up again"I wonder if we'll meet again,And talk about life since then,And talk about why did it end" But it shows that he's over her now and that if he ever saw her again she could or should be able to c that"So take a look at me now!" This is such an amazing song!!

I personally think that this song is perhaps about his first love or so it seems. As why write a song about someone unless they really meant something to you, like a first love usually does. I wonder if we'll meet again, And talk about life since then, And talk about why did it end

I get the feeling that the singer is reminiscing about the relationship, because perhaps he needs someone in his life now or is particularly sad. Because he was happy then he thinks back to then. I also get the notion from two particular parts of the song that he didn't want it to end, or never thought it would end as he sings: 'You made me feel like the one, You made me feel like the one, The one'- implying that he felt he was the one for her. And also with the lines: 'I wonder if we'll meet again, And talk about life since then, And talk about why did it end'- It's as though even now he still needs some closure, some reasoning as to how it could possibly have ended. Though he has moved on with time.

My most favourite line in the song, which really sums up the meaning of the song to me is: 'Sleeping in the back of my car, We never went far, We wouldn't need to go far'- It's saying that the relationship was not based solely on the sexual/physical/lust aspect. They didn't need that as they were into each other so much. It's beautiful.

What does everyone else think of my interpretation?

'Thinking back, thinking of you, Summer time think it was June, Yeah I think it was June. Laying back head on the grass, Chewing gum, having some laughs, Yeah having some laughs' He's reminiscing back to when he was with this girl, obviously in June. The things they did & the time they spent together.

'You made me feel like the one, You made me feel like the one, The one' When he was with this girl she made him feel so special, like he was really wanted. I can relate to that a lot, as im sure most people can as some time or another.

'Drinking back drinking for two, Drinking with you, When drinking was new. Sleeping in the back of my car, We never went far, We wouldn't need to go far' He's again remembering the things they did together. When they discovered drinking together, which to me implies it was a romance when they were younger. When he says they didn't need to go far, he's implying that all they needed was each others company.

'I don't know where we are going now, I don't know where we are going now' He's wondering if anything will ever become of him & that girl again.

Wake up call, coffee and juice, Remembering you, what happened to you. I wonder if we'll meet again, And talk about life since then, And talk about why did it end' I think this is basically saying that he hopes they'll meet again one day & talk about why things ended between them & hopefully work something out for the future. He clearly still thinks very highly of this girl. Perhaps he hadn't met anyone like her up to then & hasn't done since.

'So take a look at me now! So take a look at me now! So take a look at me now! So take a look at me now! So take a look at me now!' Maybe the reason the relationship ended was because she didn't believe he was making enough of himself? Now he's saying look where I ended up.

The impression I get is that maybe the relationship ended quite sourly. The one thing I adore about this song is that it's so upbeat but it clearly has such a sad meaning. He clearly still thinks the world of the woman & would do anything to have something like they what they had back then... Something anyone can relate to at one point or another, a definite good summer romance tune!

xx

My Interpretation

Yup. Doesn't have to be a relationship ending though, perhaps it could just be a moment in his life that he enjoyed, and how its changed; and that he wants all his old friends to see how he and his life has changed.

I DONT KNOW WHERE WE ARE GOING NOW!!!!! que riff

i dont think this song is targetted at stuart, i think its more about his girlfriend, or about a girlfriend.. i think this song he is reminiscing about the whole relationship and talking about its good things, but now its over he doesnt quite know what to do with himself.. "i dont know where we are going now" and thinking about if they'll remain friends and talk still.. he also is telling them how much they actually meant to him "you made me feel like the one"..

or maybe its about something completely different,,,

but yes "so take a look at me now" since i told you its over.. maybe its a kinda add on to that song like maybe its about that same relationship and this song is just a add on to the story behind the first song
