As If I Hadn't Slept Lyrics
It's always 3 a.m.
in your world
so I'm drinking this
as if I hadn't slept
telling stories which tell their stories
themselves
you didn't even hear them
I thought to somewhere else
As long as I go somewhere
you'll still be trying to see
as long as I go somewhere
you'll still be trying
as long as I go somewhere
you'll still by lying to me
as long as i go somewhere
if you're so sure that you don't need love
only it's as if I hadn't slept
as laughter smiles back in your direction
but you're protected by the smoke from
your cigarette
then you tried to hold my hand
under the table
but it's far too vague to be meaningful
as long as i go somewhere
you'll still be trying to see
as long as i go somewhere
every night has a hold over me
as long as i go somewhere
you'll still be lying to me
as long as i go somewhere
and you held me like i was a shadow
but completely without any mystery
and you compared me to a shadow
which in itself is
some kind of victory
in your world
so I'm drinking this
as if I hadn't slept
telling stories which tell their stories
themselves
you didn't even hear them
I thought to somewhere else
you'll still be trying to see
as long as I go somewhere
you'll still be trying
as long as I go somewhere
you'll still by lying to me
as long as i go somewhere
only it's as if I hadn't slept
as laughter smiles back in your direction
but you're protected by the smoke from
your cigarette
then you tried to hold my hand
under the table
but it's far too vague to be meaningful
you'll still be trying to see
as long as i go somewhere
every night has a hold over me
as long as i go somewhere
you'll still be lying to me
as long as i go somewhere
but completely without any mystery
and you compared me to a shadow
which in itself is
some kind of victory

I haven't the first idea what this song is about, but I just love the guitar chord that comes right after the "some kind of victory" line... (Dsus2?)
I think it's about him being in a relationship where emomtions were confused and his partner was judgmental "you compare me" meaning there were standards he felt resentful of
my interpretation though..
great song.. love the intro, it's one of my favourites of theirs.
To me this song is really hard to get your head around - Idlewild seem to make their meaings so subtle but yet so clever and obvious if you catch onto it.
I'm not sure if I have - I think this song is about the breakdown of communication between a couple...One tries their best to understand the other; "It's always 3am in your world, so i'm drinking this as if i hadn't slept." But their relationship remains superficial and kind of pointless, despite any efforts to improve it.
