Cars and Telephones Lyrics
I read the pages about me
In her autobiography
They were brief and to the point
A flash while you are getting dressed
A memory that needs to be repressed
I'll just wait until it's over
Since you've gone away
I never know just what to say
Since you've gone away
I never know just what to say
Because I like cars more than telephones
Your voice in my ear makes me feel so alone
Tonight I'm going to drive
The silver moon is shining bright
Over the interstate
God saying, "Hurry, don't be late"
Soon the sun will rise
That's when the romance dies
And I'm just tired of running around
I walked
To get the mail today
I guess
Your letter never came
I'll just
Check again tomorrow
A flash while you are getting dressed
Memory that needs to be repressed
I'll just wait without saying a word
Since you've gone away
I never know just what to say
Since you've gone away
I never know just what to say
Because I like cars more than telephones
Your voice in my head makes me feel so alone
Tonight I'm going to drive
The silver moon is shining bright
Over the interstate
God saying, "Hurry, don't be late"
Soon the sun will rise
That's when the romance dies
And I'm just tired of running around
But fuck it, I love you no less
I'm going to feel like shit
By the time I get to you
Now the sky is turning blue
The stars, they disappear
One by one with daylight, dear
And yes, you're in my head
But that doesn't make you here
And I've lost all my friends
But you're the one I miss the most
And now I'm almost there
Yeah, I'm almost to the coast
And if I had any notion
Of how to drive my car across the Atlantic Ocean
I'd be fucking set
In her autobiography
They were brief and to the point
A flash while you are getting dressed
A memory that needs to be repressed
I'll just wait until it's over
I never know just what to say
Since you've gone away
I never know just what to say
Your voice in my ear makes me feel so alone
Tonight I'm going to drive
The silver moon is shining bright
Over the interstate
God saying, "Hurry, don't be late"
Soon the sun will rise
That's when the romance dies
And I'm just tired of running around
To get the mail today
I guess
Your letter never came
I'll just
Check again tomorrow
Memory that needs to be repressed
I'll just wait without saying a word
I never know just what to say
Since you've gone away
I never know just what to say
Your voice in my head makes me feel so alone
Tonight I'm going to drive
The silver moon is shining bright
Over the interstate
God saying, "Hurry, don't be late"
Soon the sun will rise
That's when the romance dies
And I'm just tired of running around
I'm going to feel like shit
By the time I get to you
Now the sky is turning blue
The stars, they disappear
One by one with daylight, dear
And yes, you're in my head
But that doesn't make you here
And I've lost all my friends
But you're the one I miss the most
And now I'm almost there
Yeah, I'm almost to the coast
And if I had any notion
Of how to drive my car across the Atlantic Ocean
I'd be fucking set

Yes, this song is about a long-distance relationship, but it does speak to something more complicated.
I think it also conveys--not just the torment of distance in a relationship--but the pain of how peoples lives go different ways over time, and more often than not those different ways are apart. How you can share so much with a person but life carries you in different directions, and can leave a different taste in different mouths. (To me, that's what the autobiography line addresses.) I think the song is ultimately about the futility one can feel in the face of that.
To me, that is the complexity that makes this song so haunting.
The stars they disappear One by one with daylight dear And yes you're in my head But that doesn't make you here
One of those lyrics that make you wonder why you ever thought of becoming a songwriter when you'd have to compete with this. Absolutely beautiful.
I have never heard any song so perfectly capture the torment of a long-distance love.
This song brings back the emotion of a very specific time in my life, a long time ago. The emptiness of just talking, the need to be near that person, the desparation and dream of overcoming the distance, and the reality that daylight brings... and "memory that needs to be repressed". Just a straightforward and poetic and amazing song.
I love this song. I couldn't stop listening to it when I was in a rather long distance relationship. It makes so much sense and it's so atmospheric capturing the feeling of missing someone so much, but never being able to see them. Does anyone know where you can get the guitar tab?
This song makes me cry if I thinkabout it too much. I love it so much... and I have to agree with all of you, it's perfectly fitting with the harshness of a long distance relationship. This is a personal question, but seeing as this we're all fairly anonymous, can I ask about the long distance relationships you've had, the ones that this song recalls? (to the people who've already posted, or to anybody else who can relate to this song). And yeah, this song is beautiful. his devotion comes through so honestly through the lyrics and tone, which are amazing... "And yes you're in my head, but that doesn't make you here"- he's brilliant!
this song dosent only relate to a long distance relationship, to me it does fit perfectly into that sort of....thing, but to me some of the lyrics well alot of them i can relate to very well like, not directly but i know the feelings of the song, like the bit:
"I walked To get the mail today I guess Your letter never came I'll just Check again tomorrow"
thats like the feeling of growing distant....or just growing distant
and
"And yes you're in my head But that doesn't make you here And I've lost all my friends But you're the one I miss the most"
missing a friend, a very close friend, i've felt that, regrets, youve lost most of your friends. maybe by your own actions, this person was maybe someone that you feel strongly about a friend maybe, in love with them....i realy dont know how to explain this stuff written down.....you guys understand it better than me i guess
Such a sad song. I agree that it's about a long distance relationship. The lyrics and sound are just beautiful.
one of my favourite songs. i definitely think it's about a long distance relationship. the last verse is one of the most beautiful i've ever heard.
im starting to doubt it is about a long distance relationship, if it was than why does it say
"I read the pages about me In her autobiography They were brief and to the point"
someone has obviously had a change of face
the song isnt a long distance relationship to me, the whole thing with the mail still to me is like the one i quoted just before and also when it says
I like cars more than telephones your voice in my head makes me feel so alone
so hes driving to get rid of all the shit hes been feeling
why does it seem so obvious to me that this song isnt about a long distance relationship but something more complicated
so yeah the last lines to imply a long distance relationship but earlier on in the song has nothing like that
Yes, this song speaks to long distance relationships. It also speaks to physically close relationships with emotional distances, too. It sucks when you and your partner are on an emotionally different level.
