What I'm Trying to Say Lyrics
You look so good in the clothes of a poseur
And when you smiled all the kids fell apart here
I know a place where it's warm and it's dry, dear
Let me take you there
North of the river all the streets are the same
We can pretend that they don't know our name
And the heat is turned all the way to full
So don't pretend that you don't feel the pull
I am trying to say
What I want to say
Without having to say
I love you
You look so good in the shoes of an outcast
I kissed your throat every time they said it wouldn't last
But then I knew you, I knew you, I knew you
I really knew you
We fell apart in the parties of the empty heart
We danced the junkies in the shadows of bad modern art
We clicked our heels and we wished we were home
One more tab and your silk hits the chrome
I am trying to say
What I want to say
Without having to say
I love you
Spring comes in when I'm rolling up another one
I draw the curtains in the glare of the same old sun
We are collapsed in the act of just being here
Three blues, two greens, and a beer
I am trying to say
What I want to say
Without having to say
(But it's impossible to say
Without having to say)
I love you
And when you smiled all the kids fell apart here
I know a place where it's warm and it's dry, dear
Let me take you there
We can pretend that they don't know our name
And the heat is turned all the way to full
So don't pretend that you don't feel the pull
What I want to say
Without having to say
I love you
I kissed your throat every time they said it wouldn't last
But then I knew you, I knew you, I knew you
I really knew you
We danced the junkies in the shadows of bad modern art
We clicked our heels and we wished we were home
One more tab and your silk hits the chrome
What I want to say
Without having to say
I love you
I draw the curtains in the glare of the same old sun
We are collapsed in the act of just being here
Three blues, two greens, and a beer
What I want to say
Without having to say
(But it's impossible to say
Without having to say)
I love you

I always thought this song was about trying to get around those three little words. Before my boyfriend and I started saying I love you this song came on one day fairly early on in our relationship and it hit me like a ton of bricks - I was constantly biting my tongue, avoiding those three little words in fear of scaring him off. I wanted to say I love you for so long, but I wasn't sure if he felt the same way... so I told him in other ways without actually saying 'I love you'.
hah hah. Renegade love. Drug junkies, 'outcasts,' the alternative life style. Just try imagining Amy or Torq wearing punk/goth clothings.
I can relate to this song...you just want to get your point across to the other person in the relationship without having to fall back on 'I love you' to settle a dispute.
I think that the person just wants to talk to the other like just a friend and not lovers. They don't want to feel the pressure to say "I love you" and instead just have a casual conversation with no strings.
Reminds me of my boyfriend. For the simple fact that we can say I love you, but why say it constantly? I think it's more about how you carry yourself in a relationship and your ability to SHOW you love someone instead of just tossing the words around until they mean nothing. At least that's what I get from it.
This song should be the anthem of my last relationship. In particular, it reminds me of the night that we went to the club with his friends . . . that night, I tried to show him how much I cared about him, "without having to say I love you." Too bad I knew all along "that it wouldn't last!"
wow thats a completely different look on it raraerica, but now i think about it, it seems correct. its a bummer there isnt anything fluffy and loving about this song then.
I guess this song is about the fear of having to say "I love you." It can be hard to say it, so you just want to imply it to your significant other.
Pretty briiliant band.
"We are collapsed in the act of just being here"
Brilliant line.
yeah i agree with raraerica for the most part. but, J-Box, it can still be "fluffy" if thats how u want to interpret it. there is totally more than just one meaning to this song. more then one thing they are trying to express. its sweet though =)
