In California Lyrics

In California, I dream of snow
And all the places we used to go
With the night falling down (2x)
Now I'm living Korea Town
Waking to the sound of car alarms

I remember your face
When I showed you the ticket
Said you were happy for me
Your heart wasn't in it

Just a phone call away
Now there's nothing to say
As the days roll by, disconnected
In the land where the sun's always shining
I'm crying alone
The palm trees are laughing at me

Another fool playing songs that don't matter
For people who chatter endlessly

Another suicide on the 405
The black dahlia, she smiles and smiles
It's the same old town that bled her dry
One more start and one more time
Bound to make it do or die

Take a walk to bonnybray
Try to wash the dreams away
They tell me L.A.'s beautiful
When it rains

Another of my favourites, even if this "going to California/Other Big Place to make it as an artist" theme has never appealed to me at all. I like how she sings it -- sort of cutting she sounds short, and with that echo. She sounds exactly right, kind of sad and disillusioned but not totally desperate yet.

"Palm trees are laughing at me" -- makes me smile, such lovely cynical mirth.

I love this song; it's so melancholy. Also, I believe it's:

Another fool playing songs that don't matter For people who chatter endlessly

'Nother suicide on the 405

I adore this song. Just discovered it, actually, but I wanted to add that one of the great lyrics in the song is "The Black Dahlia, she smiles and smiles" Wanted to point out that the Black Dahlia, when she was murdered, had a smile cut into her face from ear to ear.

I think it's "one more starlet, one more time." Elizabeth Short, the Black Dahlia, was an aspiring actress when she was murdered (mouth cut ear to ear, as noted, and the body cut in half and drained of all the blood -- "bled dry").

Take a walk to "Bonnie Brae", a street that runs N/S from Korea Town all the way north past Beverly BL.
