The Great Communicator Lyrics
My own intent's not easy to see.
I'm not the great communicator I used to be, apparently;
But I know what it means when i hear screams,
And it's the sonics not the phonics and it's all in the delivery
Now I'm learnin' bout what lies underneath,
So if you catch me speakin' through my teeth
Ow -you gotta stop me now.
I keep my ear to the street,
ANd I keep on reading lips and looks as I'm looking for that perfect beat;
But I know it's all down to me
And if something's lost in the translation,
I guess I shouldn't take it so personally
But your 'esses' look like 'effes' to me
And we been Ebonic since we been thirteen
And how ya like me now?
They get detached from what's been goin' on
They feed ya crap you can't keep growin' on
They give ya stats that tell you nothin' at all
'bout who ya wanna be. Who you wanna be?
I'm not the great communicator I used to be, apparently;
But I know what it means when i hear screams,
And it's the sonics not the phonics and it's all in the delivery

How could no one have commented on this by now? It's so catchy! I love it.

How very true of politicians. Also, Reagan was called the great communicator.
My thoughts on Reagan (not as an attack on pinkeyswear but on Reagan and the Bitburg incident): Reagan was brilliant he communicated too the vets and Jews and other Holocaust survivors and WW2 era folks as well as the politicians (not that I care what the politicians think) that he didn't care about them. Then he communicated quite well that the nazi soldiers buried at Bitburg (which had a large amount of Waffen-SS troops) were victims just as the people in the concentration camps. He also after visting Bitburg quite eloqently communicated that the soldiers at Bitburg were just simple soldiers...

He also after visting Bitburg quite eloqently communicated that the soldiers at Bitburg were just simple soldiers (nothing says simple solider like Waffen-SS) Though it is quite possible that Reagan's brilliant communications were written by Patrick Buchanan which would also make sense as Mr. Buchanan is a well noted racist and holocaust denier supporter as well as an extremist conservative (much like Reagan but probably just a slight bit more racist)
Reagan should have stayed at the University of Iowa broadcasting home football games for the Hawkeyes. His whole failure presidency would have never happened and quite possibly the world would have been a whole lot better off. Though quite possibly Ted Leo wouldn't have written this song but I could do a trade this song for Reagan not being president ever. Just so long as he has all of his other great songs
Ted did a recent interview where they asked if this song was, in fact, about Ronald Reagan.
It turns out that this song is with the Ebonics debate that was going on at the time in mind.
This is an awesome song. Its may fav Ted leo song rite now. "I'm not the great communicator I used to be, apparently" When he says this does he mean that maybe some people don't believe he is as good a song writer as he used to be?
