I've loved this song for a long time and I was listening to it and all of the sudden I was overcome by this feeling. This understanding. And I had to see what Greenwood meant and while all that you have each said is right, it is much simpler than that.

It is about a life that is full of passion. It is about a life that is worth living.

As you can here in the beginning of the song, and says before playing the song in concert, this song is about never giving up. I think it's easy to go through see how the words relate. I just don't know what he means but Let the Drummer Kick that...maybe to always keep the beat going, heart beat...never give up...?

well im not big on this type of music, but my friend told me I had to hear it, he said it is my theme song. lol . I've been a drummer for 6 years and this song makes me feel sad, because it meens alot to me. It might meen something else, but to me it is all the emotions of being a musician, and wanting to do your thing, even if people don't agree.

I like how Greenwood combnes different styles in the song. You can hear hip-hop, jazz, and light rock all fused together. And his voice has a fell of country and reggae mixed together.

I also like the different format of this song from most. Just using the one word lines is different.

To me it describes the different situations a person who is not privileged will go through in their life. And you just have to find inspiration to get you through those difficult (and easy) times.

i always thought they were saying "Let the drama kid die" and repeats... but it's a great song i heard from COACH CARTER!!!

I always thought that he was saying "let the drama kid die too. I think if he had been saying that the mood of the song and the way it was used in the movie "coach carter" would have reflected the way the basketball team was determined to honor their contracts and the song would have moved me in a different way.

Who composed the words in the parenthesis?

Those are not the true meanings of the words or the street meanings of the words to my knowledge.

The words are all noun forms of a state of mind. This is a song that describes the emotional enlightenment that one experiences during the trials (Journey) of life.

I think that the order of the soing is very important as it describes the 12 stages of the Journey.

  1. Heroes are introduced in the ORDINARY WORLD, where
  2. they receive the CALL TO ADVENTURE.
  3. They are RELUCTANT at first or REFUSE THE CALL, but
  4. are encouraged by a MENTOR to
  5. CROSS THE FIRST THRESHOLD and enter the Special World, where
  6. they encounter TESTS, ALLIES, AND ENEMIES.
  7. They APPROACH THE INMOST CAVE, crossing a second threshold
  8. where they endure the ORDEAL.
  9. They take possession of their REWARD and
  10. are pursued on THE ROAD BACK to the Ordinary World. 11.They cross the third threshold, experience a RESURRECTION, and are transformed by the experience.
  11. They RETURN WITH THE ELIXIR, a boon or treasure to benefit the Ordinary World.

this song is to me a master piece. it is simple and deep. intro instrumental brings you in. the verse's lines are conprised of words that convey feelings and emotions it . then the hook let the drummer kick. get the visual of walking through life. kinda like when you're walkining down the street thinking about your probs and how you can fix them.after there verse repeats in same order but for each word it has the clerification of the word. So you know what it is and there for can more easily over come it. this song is abou clarity and move past problems, it's about life.

The way I understand it is that it's about an ex-con trying to straighten his life out and finds inspiration in music, at the end of the song he's saying that you don't have to wait til you f up your life to try and find inspiration (whether it's music, art, a muse, etc.).

Here's my run down of the lyrics:

Relations (he meets bad influences) Creation (they create a volitile situation for themselves) Incarceration (he ends up in prison) Equation (prison equates to humiliation) Humiliation Reincarnation (he is reborn a good citizen) Situation (his relations and creations provide good outcomes) Elation (he is elated to be out of prison and on the right track) Identification (he is identified by police as and ex-con and is harrassed) Retaliation (he seeks retaliation against police harrassment) Inspiration (he seeks inspiration do deal with hardships but finds a substitution) Substitution Non-Inclusion (his make shift inspiration is a drug habit that seperates him from his friends & family) Drug Infusion Mass Confusion (his world is upside down from drugs) Delusion
Solution (the solution and conclusion is inspiration...Let the drummer kick, music, art, literature, etc) Conclusion Inspiration

I agree with the guy above me, his interpretation sounds very close to the meaning + story of the song meant to inspire change in people. And whether the song is saying 'expiration' or 'inspiration' at the end of the song, death is what inspires and determines creation of all beings. Death is what drives and changes, re-shapes all things. Re-creation.

So I think the most important message of the song is to say to all, that whatever is holding you back from your fate, your volition to create, you must overcome to transcend the hardships. So when he says 'let the drummer kick that' he's saying 'find a passion and a purpose to surpass your shortcomings and embrace a destiny of your choosing'. Let the beat of life, the drummer, your heart, the will to live, kick the poison of sin and convulsion.

If he's saying 'let the drummer kid die', then to those who hear it, he's saying leave those childish distractions and vices behind and grasp a better life. Not necessarily better, but more appropriate to your desires to fulfill your place on earth as a human being.

I thought the one-word lines were cool and random, but I gave meaning to them just for fun

Relation Creation (When we relate with one another, we create a bond)

Incarceration Determination (When we're incarcerated, we're determined to break free)

Equation Humiliation Reincarnation (Equation as in equality; humility allows us to treat each other as equal; humility allows us to be broken down and be born again)

Situation Elation (When we are more aware of our surroundings, we can be elated with what we have)

Identification Retaliation (When we identify our problems, we retaliate)

Education Inspiration No substitution (It is good to be both educated and inspired, but there is no substitution for the other)

Solution Conclusion (When we have the solution, it's time to conclude)
