The Tower Lyrics

The one who survives by making the lives of others worthwhile
She's coming apart
Right before my eyes
The one who depends on the services she renders to those who come knocking
She's seeing too clearly what she can't be
What understanding defies
She says

[Chorus]
I need not to need
Or else a love with intuition
Someone who reaches out to my weakness and won't let go
I need not to need
I've always been the tower
But now I feel like I'm the flower
Trying to bloom in snow

She turns out the light anticipating night falling tenderly around her
And watches the dusk
The words won't come
She carries the act so convincingly the fact is sometimes she believes it
That she can be happy the way things are
Be happy with the things she's done
And yet

[Chorus]

Reach out but hold back
Where is safety
Reach out and hold back
Where is the one who can change me
Where is the one
[x2]

[Chorus]

I feel like I'm the flower
Trying to bloom in snow
The danger and the power
The friend and the foe

"I need not to need." The person in this song has made life of giving to others. Perhaps she's a teacher, a doctor, a mother, a wife. Heck, perhaps she's a hooker. She feels something we've all felt. You give and feel you get nothing in return. Where does it end?

Not sure the song gives any answers...probably because the person this woman is looking for is thinking the same thoughts. The friend and the foe is that guy/gal reaching out and holding back.

I think this song tells of a person who is usualy the one that listens, gives advice and comforts others ("I've always been the tower"). Now that she's in need of some of that herself she either can't articulate it or just has nobody to talk to about herself, feeling alone ("But now I feel like I'm the flower, trying to bloom in snow").

By George, I do believe you've got it :) Nice song. It's amazing just how many songs describe how a person is feeling at different moments in his/her lives. It sure beats television :)

This is definately one of the major Vienna Teng songs that I connect with. Its mainly about the type of people who merely are always there for others, and really never burden others with their problems. But as times grow difficult, they try to keep their sturdy composure of being the one there for everyone, but it's getting hard, as Teng puts it "A flower trying to bloom in the snow" I love this song because I'm the one who usually deals with my friends problems, and even though I currently don't have to deal with anything, if anything dramatic does ever happen to me, I have a feeling this song describes it perfectly. Beautifully written and performed.

Along the lines of what's been said, a person that's a friend to everybody but still feels alone at the end of the day.

A person that puts on an act, pretending to be perfectly happy with being alone but in solitude wishes for another to connect with.

"I need not to need, I've always been the towrer" Saying that she shouldn't want this, she needs to be stronger, but she can't stop wanting it.

She is so full of helping others (the tower) that she doesn't help herself (flower trying to bloom...) so she needs someone to come and bring up her problems and try to fix them.

It looks to me like a song about a mistress. She's in love with the man, but she can't be his wife and make her love him, even though he goes to her for sex.

She tries to act happy around him, and the"act" is so convincingly that she can sometimes believe it, that she's happy the way it is.

I'm not going to talk about what this song is supposed to mean, rather what it means to me. When I first heard this song I was going through a very difficult time in my life. The walls I had built up around myself were crumbling; the lies I had told myself and the people I was close to were falling apart around me as well. I had a difficult decision to make, one that would cause me heartache and problems throughout the rest of my life no matter which way I chose. I really identified with the woman in the song, and with the song itself, and I think it really helped me through that time.
