Song for the Rich Lyrics
Get off work about 4 o'clock
And I'm late again
Cause you'll be here by 6:30
And we'll go looking for a close parking spot again
Sitting in a room full of believers
Now you tell me what's wrong and what's right
Cause I look over at you baby
You got your good intentions focused so tight
And now it hurts me so,
To have to see you go
To watch these drugs pull you down
When the world can't get through
And there's nothing we can do
Except watch you fall in and out of this mess
What's wrong with a little bit of experimentation
To open the eyes of a new generation
Build your world on a cocaine foundation
And watch it all blow away
And it hurts me so,
To have to see you go
To watch these drugs pull you down
When there's nothing we can do
And no one to get through
Watch you fall deeper into this mess
Well I haven't seen you in a while
You know, I miss our talks
I miss your smile
This look of innocence is priceless
But right now you look so lifeless
And now it hurts me so,
To have to see you go
To watch this song break you down
And when you feel you can't get through
And there's no hope left in you
You'll know I'll be right here to help you find your way out...
And I'm late again
Cause you'll be here by 6:30
And we'll go looking for a close parking spot again
Now you tell me what's wrong and what's right
Cause I look over at you baby
You got your good intentions focused so tight
To have to see you go
To watch these drugs pull you down
When the world can't get through
And there's nothing we can do
Except watch you fall in and out of this mess
To open the eyes of a new generation
Build your world on a cocaine foundation
And watch it all blow away
To have to see you go
To watch these drugs pull you down
When there's nothing we can do
And no one to get through
Watch you fall deeper into this mess
You know, I miss our talks
I miss your smile
This look of innocence is priceless
But right now you look so lifeless
To have to see you go
To watch this song break you down
And when you feel you can't get through
And there's no hope left in you
You'll know I'll be right here to help you find your way out...

this song was written about her friend rich. he had a drug problem and she wrote the song to try to reach out to him. the line "And now it hurts me so, To have to see you go To watch this song break you down" refers to when he will come to one of her shows and he feels the need to leave when she plays this song. i'm guessing it would be pretty emotional.
this is a beautiful song. i wish more people had heard her music.
I always assumed it was written about her relationship with G Love and his cocaine use. Song for the rich, meaning a song directed to all of the people that make a lot of money quickly and start doing illicit drugs. She later changed the lyrics "build your world on a cocaine foundation" to "build your world on an empty foundation" - which again leads me to believe she is trying to protect G Love's image.

(They're in an NA/CA/AA meeting and he is telling her what he thinks is bullshit and what is not. She can tell that he is doing his best with the tools they are offering him.)
And now it hurts me so, To have to see you go To watch these drugs pull you down When the world can't get through And there's nothing we can do Except watch you fall in and out of this mess
(He/She is relapsing and nothing anyone is doing seems to be making a difference.)
What's wrong with a little bit of experimentation To open the eyes of a new generation Build your world on a cocaine foundation And watch it all blow away
(He/She is making an example of how experimenting with drugs can lead to a shitty and meaningless life.)
Well I haven't seen you in a while You know, I miss our talks I miss your smile This look of innocence is priceless But right now you look so lifeless
(When He/She is sober, she sees a part of the person that she never wants to see go..)
I don't quite understand the title
