This song to me sounds like a night of mourning the loss of a friend/lover who was buried that day. There are hints of a funeral and his presence there. It seems to be a 'go home and get wasted to block reality and it's current sadness' song, yet with much beauty in the lyrics, avoiding cliche and melodrama.
"I'll roll away and close on down... and we'll pretend, forget we're dead" seems to taste of a self described 'spiritual-death', at the loss of the friend.
"oh where you lay/ your head tonight... take up your wings and fly back out"
Sounds like he's singing of a grave in which a recently deceased friend has been placed. The wing reference of angel wings, to fly back out of the grave to heaven.
"when we're killed or cured" sounding like two options for exiting drug addiction

"until hammers fall" would be a reference to his living environment, falling hammers being a clever analogy of nearby workers resuming a construction job in the morning. "i kept your peom here/ with all my other gear/ but in the end/ i missed what it meant" a love poem or suicide note. Perhaps he mistook the latter for the former.
I would put money on this being a lament of the loss of drug addicted friend, and a contemplation of the singers own addiction.
