Never Say Never Lyrics
There'd be no sunlight or a glimmer
Of sunlight landin' on the street
Sunsuit girls must be discreet
Sunsuit girls must be discreet
Nursing their fathers locked inside
They masqueraded as his bride
If we slept together
I might like you better
If we slept together
I might like you better
If we slept together
But there's somethin'
In your eyes that says
Maybe that's never
Never say never
That man could give a fuck
About the grin on your face
As you walk by, randy as a goat
He's sleepin' on papers
But he'd be warm in your coat
If we slept together
I might like you better
If we slept together
I might like you better
If we slept together
But there's somethin'
In your eyes that says
Maybe that's never
Never say never
On the street, on the stairs
Who's on your flight
Old couple walks by, as ugly as sin
But he's got her, she's got him
If we slept together
I might like you better
If we slept together
I might like you better
If we slept together
I might like you better
If we slept together
I might like you better
If we slept together
But there's somethin'
In your eyes that says
Maybe that's never
Never say never
Across the sky so slow
The sun seems to move
Across the sky so slow
It's us who's turning
With no place to go
If we slept together
I might like you better
If we slept together
I might like you better
If we slept together

Oh, for crying in Manhattan! It is NOT about father/ daughter incest OR a slut. It is about a young romantic maiden questing for her heart's true hero and wondering how even a homeless person or a physically unsightly older person can have a partner while she remains unpartnered, and how many women end up marrying or in relationships with men who are like their fathers

i don't think it's about incest.
to ME, an OPINION:
"Sunsuit girls must be discreet Nursing their fathers locked inside They masqueraded as his bride"
Many promiscuous girls must be "discreet" because a lot of these girls (at least that I know) don't have fathers in their lives and they try to fill that void by well...being whores. It's even in the psych handbook. check it.
@ChakidaBoreeta you get it right
@ChakidaBoreeta you get it right

There is a painting called ROMAN CHARITY, where an elderly gentleman in prison is being breastfed by his daughter. I think this line. “Nursing their fathers locked inside” May be inspired by that painting

To me it seems like the meaning is that there is someone for everyone and you never know who that person could be regardless of any age or any social differences. I may be wrong. I’m not getting any incest reference but everyone can interpret the lyrics differently

Had to read some of the comments and found NOBODY, got the meaning of this song. Maybe it's because you didnt grow up in the era that this song was released. Well I did, so let me explain it to you... Llife during the 80's, assuming you entered the decade around the age of 15 or older, was filled with wants and gets. If you wanted it all you had to do was buy it or show off and get it. This held true for sex as well, especially true. After Lyall had formed the leg W for all the band members at the time and some others that helped her band (and, dont you dare say a thing about her size, I refer to a joke that compares to a moped and proof). Anyway, she realized that all types of females are horny, from sunbathers to homeless, and some will do it wherever, and the whole time she is seen in her father's eyes as sweet and will be a perfect virgin bride. Anyway, that's it, it's simple and basic, and yes she does, because of its inclusion to the whole aspect, include incest. No pardon me as I return to 1984......

This song is awesome!

CuteSparkina, I like your interpretation better (I can relate to it so much better!), but the sad truth is, it's just not true. Yes, Romeo Void actually said in one of their earlier videos that this song is indeed about incest, and not just about that, but also about homelessness and murder. The music video clears up a lot of the confusion.
Personally though, I think Deborah Iyall is the best singer ever! Big girls can rock too and all ya'll who say she's too fat can go eat a burger!
@DesertRose98 Perhaps we can learn from this. Don't speak to someone like they're an idiot unless you know for certain your not about to prove yourself an idiot. Actually, there's rarely reason to speak to people that way even if you are 100% you're right.

@DesertRose98 Maybe you should check out an interview with Debora Iyall, Here, it is not about incest unless you are calling her a liar. https://www.rockerzine.com/2012/07/deborah-iyall-of-romeo-void-staying-strong/

In case you don't want to check out the interview, here is her quote about who she wrote the song for: Debora: The song was written for Frank Zincavage, the bass player of Romeo Void. He never knew until the year 2000. I had to have surgery and they told me I could die and should get everything in order, just in case. I was fretting about telling...

He never knew until the year 2000. I had to have surgery and they told me I could die and should get everything in order, just in case. I was fretting about telling Frank. I had told [songwriting partner] Peter Dunn, within confidence and he and Frank are good friends. I thought I could not have Peter tell him after I was gone. So I called him and told him, “I’m going for surgery and I have to tell you just in case that I wrote “Never Say Never” about you”. He was shocked. The relationships in the band were very platonic but it was in the back of my mind. The lyrics, “I might like you better if we slept together” is saying in some ways, I really don’t like you all that much. I might come to really appreciate you some more if I was getting some action.

I'm pretty sure it's not about her dad and I'm also pretty sure you're being overly dramatic

Hmmm... after giving this one a great deal of thought and erudite study I have come to the conclusion that this song is about a woman who likes to breastfeed her imprisoned father and sleep with homeless men and airline passengers. Oh, and she also adheres to a philosophy she might hold a person in higher esteem if she has sex with them first (weirdly, this tends to coincide with my personal outlook on getting to know new women!) You really don't hear songs like this much anymore...

BillyBudd is right IMO. if people bash women for being outspoken about such subject today (check the comments...), you can imagine the names Debora was called, back in 1982. I would say that's how you make a stand about such subject in a fun, danceable way... if you can stand such small-minded people.
