Love On A Farmboy's Wages Lyrics
High climbs the summer sun
High stands the corn
And tonight when my work is done
We will borrow your father's carriage
We will drink and prepare for marriage
Soon my darling, soon my darling
Shilling for the fellow who brings the sheep in
Shilling for the fellow who milks the herd
Shilling for the fellow with a wife for keeping
How can we feed love on a farmboy's wages
Deep under winter snow
Deep lay the lambs
And tonight by the full moon's glow
Flask of wine on my feather bedding
We will drink and prepare for wedding
Soon my darling, soon my darling
Shilling for the fellow who brings the sheep in
Shilling for the fellow who milks the herd
Shilling for the fellow with a wife for keeping
How can we feed love on a farmboy's wages
People think that I'm no good
Painting pictures carving wood
Be a rich man if I could
But the only job I do well is here on the farm
On the farm
And it's breaking my back
We will borrow your father's carriage
We will drink and prepare for marriage
Soon my darling, soon my darling
Shilling for the fellow who brings the sheep in
Shilling for the fellow who milks the herd
Shilling for the fellow with a wife for keeping
How can we feed
Love on a farmboy's
Love on a farmboy's
Love on a farmboy's wages?
High stands the corn
And tonight when my work is done
We will borrow your father's carriage
We will drink and prepare for marriage
Soon my darling, soon my darling
Shilling for the fellow who milks the herd
Shilling for the fellow with a wife for keeping
How can we feed love on a farmboy's wages
Deep lay the lambs
And tonight by the full moon's glow
Flask of wine on my feather bedding
We will drink and prepare for wedding
Soon my darling, soon my darling
Shilling for the fellow who milks the herd
Shilling for the fellow with a wife for keeping
How can we feed love on a farmboy's wages
Painting pictures carving wood
Be a rich man if I could
But the only job I do well is here on the farm
On the farm
And it's breaking my back
We will drink and prepare for marriage
Soon my darling, soon my darling
Shilling for the fellow who milks the herd
Shilling for the fellow with a wife for keeping
How can we feed
Love on a farmboy's
Love on a farmboy's
Love on a farmboy's wages?

Why no comments? This is in my top 5 XTC songs, and in my top 20 songs of all time. It really has a gorgeous sound to it, something that is really rare in the world of modern music.
An ode for a simpler time when handwork for the admiration of alcohol, sheep love and a fathers carriage was supreme.

i love this song
"People think that I'm no good Painting pictures carving wood Be a rich man if I could But the only job I do well is here on the farm On the farm And it's breaking my back"
I love this verse and the vitriol he uses when he sings the last line. At frst glance this is a song about the simple joys of working on the land, but this man really wishes he didn't have to toil so hard for such little reward.
It is such a beautifully crafted, seemingly original tune. It's where I started my full catalog exploration of all songs partridge and crew. A treasure of the 80's that should be as famous as any Beatles melody, but may still be well known to future agrarians, when discovered in some odd way. It's so beautifully emotional.
First, "painting pictures carving wood" does not describe a typical farm work. It is an allegory on being an artist; I think it represents Andy himself. Second, there is another XTC song with a similar meaning - "Earn enough for us". Apparently Andy was under a lot of financial pressure when he was young, probably he felt insecure about the future, he was not sure he will be able to provide for his family. Another song, "Harvest Festival", has a clue about Andy feeling that he is a failure while at school: - "And what a year when the exams and crops all failed". So, no surprise he was feeling insecure about his future.
