Earn Enough For Us Lyrics
I've been praying all the week through
At home, at work and on the bus
I've been praying I can keep you
And to earn enough for us
I can take humiliation
And hurtful comments from the boss
I'm just praying by the weekend
I can earn enough for us
Found a house that won't repair itself
With its windows cracking
And a roof held together with holes
Just because we're at the bottom of the ladder
We shouldn't be sadder
Than others like us
Who have goals for the betterment of life
Glad that you want to be my wife, but honest
I've been praying all the week through
At home at work and on the bus
I've been praying I can keep you
And to earn enough for us
So you're saying that we're going to be three
Now, a father's what I'll be
Don't get me wrong, I'm so proud
But the belt's already tight
I'll get another job at night, but honest
I can take humiliation
And hurtful comments from the boss
I'm just praying by the weekend
I can earn enough for us
Just because we're at the bottom of the ladder
We shouldn't be sadder
Than others like us
Who have goals for the betterment of life
Glad that you want to be my wife, but honest
I can take humiliation
And hurtful comments from the Boss
I'm just praying by the weekend
I can earn enough for us
I can earn enough for us
At home, at work and on the bus
I've been praying I can keep you
And to earn enough for us
And hurtful comments from the boss
I'm just praying by the weekend
I can earn enough for us
With its windows cracking
And a roof held together with holes
Just because we're at the bottom of the ladder
We shouldn't be sadder
Than others like us
Who have goals for the betterment of life
Glad that you want to be my wife, but honest

A song obviously about the pressures and stress of trying to make ends meet in a marraige/family. Fits nicely in the "marraige section" of the Skylarking "life to death" concept album. See "Big Day" and "Another Satellite".
Lovely example of Partridge's typically honest style of lyric writing, about the pressures and strains of starting your own family.
Beautiful poetry in the rhyme scheme, "roof held together with holes" brought together a number of lines later with "others like us who have goals".
And what a line to have in a pop song - "than others like us who have goals for the betterment of life" - always makes me smile and inspires as to what you can put into a song.
This is one of the best power-pop songs of the last 30 years. Awesome.
And lyrically yes its about dealing with the pressures of finacially taking care of a family in these modern times.
A song that had added poignancy and meaning in light of our failing economy. I don't smile anymore when I listen to this song.
One of my all time favorite songs ever - listening to the XTC albums from start to finish is always such a delight
Prolly my favorite song off of skylarking. [plug]try checking it out on napster[/plug]
