The city is a jungle, you better take care
Never walk alone after midnight
If you don't believe it you better beware
Of me
I am behind you, I always find you, I am the tiger
People who fear me never go near me, I am the tiger
The city is a nightmare, a horrible dream
Some of us will dream it forever
Look around the corner and try not to scream
It's me
I am behind you, I always find you, I am the tiger
People who fear me never go near me, I am the tiger
Yellow eyes are glowing like the neon lights
Yellow eyes, the spotlights of the city nights
I am behind you, I always find you, I am the tiger
People who fear me never go near me, I am the tiger
The city is a prison, you never escape
You're forever trapped in the alleys
Look into the shadows and you'll see the shape
Of me
I am behind you, I'll always find you, I am the tiger
People who fear me never go near me, I am the tiger
Yellow eyes are glowing like the neon lights
Yellow eyes, the spotlights of the city nights
I am behind you, I'll always find you, I am the tiger
People who fear me never go near me, I am the tiger
And if I meet you, what if I eat you, I am the tiger
I am behind you, I'll always find you, I am the tiger
Tiger, tiger, tiger!
Never walk alone after midnight
If you don't believe it you better beware
Of me
People who fear me never go near me, I am the tiger
Some of us will dream it forever
Look around the corner and try not to scream
It's me
People who fear me never go near me, I am the tiger
Yellow eyes, the spotlights of the city nights
I am behind you, I always find you, I am the tiger
People who fear me never go near me, I am the tiger
You're forever trapped in the alleys
Look into the shadows and you'll see the shape
Of me
People who fear me never go near me, I am the tiger
Yellow eyes, the spotlights of the city nights
People who fear me never go near me, I am the tiger
And if I meet you, what if I eat you, I am the tiger
I am behind you, I'll always find you, I am the tiger
Tiger, tiger, tiger!

The lyrics are pretty self-explanatory, I gotta say.
In the song, this person is always underestimated, and that person's tired of what people think of him/her, so she finally shows that she/he's someone you should fear and never go near, like a tiger
Wrong and wrong, sorry. This song is about heroin. It uses metaphors, much like "Yellow" or "Hotel California". The reference to the tiger is about the drug creeping up on people; those who know heroin is bad stay away etc. Its actually quite simple when you listen to it knowing what its about. And as for people claiming that Bjorn did not know what he was writing about- thats truly an insult. He is a very astute man, extremely clever. He knew exactly what he was writing about and covered quite a number of very adult topics, cleverly disguised as bubble gum pop..
Ah yes! I see it. I knew the people saying it was a rapist were stretching. I thought it to be a more general: simply about the multiple dangers of the city, but heroin explains many of the lines. However, "never walk alone after midnight," what does that mean?

@ladyethelwinterbottom Except the nickname for heroin is brown not yellow. And it doesn't mention Hotel California. It's most likely about the dangers of night life and predators on the streets.

Have you even read their other lyrics? Erotic obession is everywhere, not heroin ????

Sure are some nutty interpretations here. The city can be a scary place, that's all.
This has to be one of the most intense, deep, complex and controversial songs ever written by Bjorn/Benny. I worked out that this song is most likely about rape from the rapists point of view; he sees himself as a tiger, prowling about after unsuspecting women. But he also has a human side; he fears himself and his own desires, and is telling women to beware of him as he is out of control.
I really began to take a deep interest in ABBA after I worked out the meaning of this song. Its just a fine example of how Bjorn and Benny, especially Bjorn, were such clever songwriters. But I wonder how many people actually ever picked up on the true meanings of their songs
@bigdave69 exactly, this theme of erotic obsession is evident in most of their songs, most lately in Don't shut me down, about stalking. Which Tiger as well as Watch out! Is about.

But already in the innocent sounding Mamma Mia.

I'm particularly fond of the theme of boring office jobs and the general routine of things suddenly disrupted by obessive infatuation like If ut wasn't for the nights as well as The day before you came, masterpieces really.
