i think it's about mundane daily life, and no matter how hard he tries to have a good day, it gets screwed up by his boss, his jackass coworkers, something like that. his future seems blank, his present seems pointless, and his past is pathetic too.
the line "suck up to the man" makes me think of the Tool song "Hooker with A Penis".. I wonder if there is any connection

This is my favourite song of all time. Yet I also have no idea what the second half of the chorus says. Still, it's all about the instrumental outro. No clue what it's about either.
It sounds to me like it's about a guy in a mental institution desperate to be released or something "I'm so fearful of the future, ignorant of the present, and wary of the past" meaning he doesn't want to have to confront his demons or something.

This song is the beginning of an amazing ride. The ride of life, actually. Coming into being, there are all these expectations of you, people telling you how to run your life, telling you right from wrong. The man in the box is a representation of those people who are stuck in that thought paradigm, who want to control everything and keep people from seeing the truth about life. And life shouldn't be about materialism or greed, but we submit to the fact that we have to accept it at some point to even survive in this world of corruption. Just the beginning of this epic tale, everyone should TRULY listen to.
I doubt it has any connection to Hooker With A Penis apart from the same line cause that song is about selling out.. I don't really know what it's about but I'd like to think that the meaning behind this song is something deeper.
