I think these lyrics are about really liking someone, and because you like them so much you are rushing ahead to spend as much of your life with them as possible, but because you are doing that "the flame is gone" and you are putting off the other person in the relationship that you trully, desparately want to be with.

I think this song is about telling someone that you love her,he is not sure whether to tell that person or not(I know i will get to this place when I feel the time is right...)but when he tries to go on with it he can not see the flame in her eyes,she lost interest in him maybe,and when he climbs to the top(when he thinks that she has responded positively to his feeling),he still can not see the sun,and happiness.
