I Looked All Over Town Lyrics
I wandered in these big blue shoes
Till we had nothing left to lose
Nobody wants you when you're a circus clown
I should know
I looked all over town
I guess folks just don't like my face
They make out like I'm some disgrace
But nothing's going to change
This painted frown
And I know
I looked all over town
Maybe somewhere I will be free
Somewhere they won't throw rocks at me
Somewhere this crazy hair could be my crown
But all my life
I looked all over town
So whistling a circus tune
I inflated one more balloon
And as I floated up I looked straight down
And I looked all over town
One last time
I looked all over town
Till we had nothing left to lose
Nobody wants you when you're a circus clown
I should know
I looked all over town
They make out like I'm some disgrace
But nothing's going to change
This painted frown
And I know
I looked all over town
Somewhere they won't throw rocks at me
Somewhere this crazy hair could be my crown
But all my life
I looked all over town
I inflated one more balloon
And as I floated up I looked straight down
And I looked all over town
One last time
I looked all over town

There's a smile in Stephin's voice in the first couple of lines, he's mocking the clown's little self-fulfilling prophecy of unloveability, his confident "and I know". Why doesn't he just change his outfit?? But it feels a little sympathetic too. In the end the clown gets to look down on us all, having defied our shallow hearts and their petty standards to the last.
I think this song is about how people can be so caught up on how people look that they never get to meet the person underneath. And that maybe there's somewhere out there for even the oddest people (like a circus clown), somewhere where people won't be mean to you for who you are ("throwing rocks" at you).
aww thats a good meaning. i like it:)
i just really love this song. one of my favorites. i love the part about how hes a circus clown and it sort of says that in the lyrics and the symbolism and repition in different words. priceless.
the melody together with the voices synchronize perfectly. one feels sometimes uncomprehended but this music makes you feel accompanied.
He should go on looking in every place until he finds his true love.
