So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
This scene is dead but I'm still restless
An hour or so until last call I guess
I shouldn't even be here much less
Drinking myself into excess
I'm not going home till I'm done
Well come on and get gone
Come on and get gone
Come on, you can't go home
The night is young
I'm blacking out
But it's been fun
Well everything's another excuse
To keep from doing what I want to
Look, I would really love to kiss you
But I guess I'm in no condition
I'm not going home with no one
Well come on and get gone
Come on and get gone
Come on, you can't go home
The night is young
I'm blacking out
But it's been fun
I said that's it
I'm not going home with no one
I'm not going home with no one
I'm not going home with no one
Well come on and get gone
Come on and get gone
Come on, you can't go home
The night is young
I'm blacking out
But it's been fun
You can't go home
The night is young
I'm blacking out
But it's been fun
You can't go home
The night is young
I'm blacking out
But it's been
An hour or so until last call I guess
I shouldn't even be here much less
Drinking myself into excess
I'm not going home till I'm done
Well come on and get gone
Come on and get gone
Come on, you can't go home
The night is young
I'm blacking out
But it's been fun
Well everything's another excuse
To keep from doing what I want to
Look, I would really love to kiss you
But I guess I'm in no condition
I'm not going home with no one
Well come on and get gone
Come on and get gone
Come on, you can't go home
The night is young
I'm blacking out
But it's been fun
I said that's it
I'm not going home with no one
I'm not going home with no one
I'm not going home with no one
Well come on and get gone
Come on and get gone
Come on, you can't go home
The night is young
I'm blacking out
But it's been fun
You can't go home
The night is young
I'm blacking out
But it's been fun
You can't go home
The night is young
I'm blacking out
But it's been

FIRST: "Well everything's another excuse To keep from doing what I want to Look, I would really love to kiss you But I guess I'm in no condition"
That part just makes me want to go write a crappy romance novel. I don't know why but it really punches me hard enough to break a few ribs and puncture my heart.
anyway.
this song, i think, is pretty much what you guys said. Basically, out drinking but i don't really think that he's out with friends mostly because of this line:
"An hour or so until last call I guess I shouldn't even be here much less Drinking myself into excess"
it just gives me an image of a person sitting by themselves trying to talk themselves out of another drink. but they decided that since it's almost last call they'll stay a while longer.
and yes, obviously he has had too much to drink, but "i'm not going home with no one," i don't think it means that he doesn't have anyone to go with, i think it means that he doesn't want to go at all. maybe he doesn't have anything else to go to, and since he's obviously met someone who he'd like to kiss but wont because of a list of excuses, he'd rather stay anyway.
and:
"You can't go home The night is young I'm blacking out But it's been "
i think that the person he was with is trying to leave, since "you can't go home" is a line, although it could be something he's saying to himself because he thinks it could go somewhere.
