I've always interpreted as being sung from the perspective of someone who has passed away, and who is addressing someone they knew in life who is cleaning off their headstone.

I think you can also go cynical with it; how futile is cleaning off a stone? Seems that something lifeless that lies in the dirt all day might be pointless to clean...
