Common People Lyrics
She came from Greece
She had a thirst for knowledge
She studied sculpture at St. Martin's college
That's where I
Caught her eye
She told me that her dad was loaded
I said, “In that case, I’ll have rum and Coca-Cola”
She said, “Fine.”
And in thirty seconds time
She said,
I want to live like common people
I want to do whatever common people do
I want to sleep with common people
I want to sleep with common people
Like you
Well, what else could I do
I said, “I’ll see what I can do.”
I took her to a supermarket
I don’t know why but I had to start it somewhere
So it started there
I said, “Pretend you got no money.”
She just laughed and said,
“Oh, you’re so funny.”
I said, “Yeah,
Well I can’t see anyone else smiling in here.”
Are you sure
You want to live like common people?
You want to see whatever common people see
You want to sleep with common people
you want to sleep with common people
Like me?
But she didn’t understand
She just smiled and held my hand
Rent a flat above a shop
Cut your hair and get a job
Smoke some fags and play some pool
Pretend you never went to school
But still you’ll never get it right
When you’re lying in bed at night
Watching roaches climb the wall
If you call your dad he could stop it all here
You’ll never live like common people
You’ll never do whatever common people do
You’ll never fail like common people
You’ll never watch your life slide out of view
And dance and drink and screw
Because there’s nothing else to do
Sing along with the common people
Sing along and it might just get you through
Laugh along with the common people
Laugh along even though they’re laughing at you
And the stupid things you do
Because you think
Poor is cool
Like a dog lying in a corner
They’ll bite you and never warn you
Look out, they’ll tear your insides out
Because everyone hate a tourist
Especially one who thinks it’s all such a laugh
And the chips stains grease will come out in the bath
You will never understand how it feels
To live your life with no meaning or control
And with nowhere left to go
You’re amazed that they exist
And they burn so bright
While you can only wonder why
Rent a flat above a shop
Cut your hair and get a job
Smoke some fags and play some pool
Pretend you never went to school
But still you’ll never get it right
When you’re lying in bed at night
Watching roaches climb the wall
If you call your dad he could stop it all
Yeah
You’ll never live like common people

my sister thinks that this is shite and that Shatner ruined one of her fav songs but i love it and I agree the Joe jackson part is brilliant, as is the part when Shatner says "they'll tear your insides out" and "watching roaches climb the wall" those lines crack me up hah
hehe, its captain kirk..
Even if you don't care for Shatner, this cover is worth listening to because of Joe Jackson. I love the guy's voice.
The Pulp version is good.
But the Shatner version has William Shatner.
Buah ha...I just about pissed myself when I heard this cover. The Joe Jackson part's alright, but Shatner's spoken word style fits in...interestingly...with the Pulp classic. His vocal style is quite different than Jarvis Cocker, I'll say that much, and it brings quite a different feeling to the lyrics.
I love this song. i have the first half of it on my iPod, and i need to get the entire thing. I love how the rich girl's trying to fit in with the common people.
even the worst artists ever can do good songs :D
The meaning of this song is pretty obvious, so I think what really needs to be discussed is the meaning implicit in having William Shatner do it. And the meaning, here (and in the other songs from the same album) is that his contribution here is both kitschy and, in many cases, poignant. He puts something into this song that wasn't there before...and it's a good something.
This is so bad that it's actually good :)
William Shatner is hilarious! He puts a fun spin on everything he does. This song is about social class tourism and wanting to see how the other half lives. The point made is that a wealthy person living "poor" in college has no idea what it's truly like to be poor because there's always a quick way out available for them...with just one call home to daddy. The first time I heard this song, when William Shatner emphasizes "WATCHING ROACHES CLIMB THE WALL", I was in tears laughing. I love him!
