i felt the need to comment because no one else has. i sense that the person he is writing about is vulnerable in his eyes and he feels the need to be protective.

I think he was like, 13 when he recorded this song! It's pretty impressive for a young 'un. It's such a cute and distubing mix of intense feelings and child-like imagination (with the idea of a lava monster).
This song isn't by Bright Eyes. It's by Conor Oberst. I think it's about being in love with someone, who thinks everything is pointless. He is saying that he will look after than whatever comes.

"water" was released in '93, when he was 13, which was put out under lumberjack records [which later became saddle creek]. then "here's to special treatment" came out in '94 right before he was going into high school.
