A Day Like Today Lyrics

"Welcome back" says the voice on the radio
But I never left, I was always right here
In your hand all the colours you thought were kings
At the turn of a card can just disappear

And I wish I could comfort you
If love is our defense
It's alright, I can comfort you
If you let me, I could love you to death

Need to see, need to say, need to be something beautiful
I can't get today out of my mind
Need to say, need to call, need to love someone beautiful
A day like today has stained my eyes

And all I ever say and all I ever do
Is just a message to you
And all I ever play are the cards you gave me
It's just my version of the truth

And I wish I could comfort you
If love is our defense
It's alright, I can comfort you
If you let me, I could love you to death

I agree with you willworkforchanel. This song is just so pretty, but also sad. The last line is almost haunting, but that just makes the song so much better.

"Welcome back" says the voice on the radio But I never left, I was always right here In your hand all the colours you thought were kings At the turn of a card can just disappear

to me, "colours" means "other people you've dated" and she thought they were wonderful, but "at the turn of a card", they disappeared and weren't as wonderful as she had previously thought.

the chorus simply says how no matter what, he's always gonna be there for her, to comfort her, and if she would LET him love her forever.

Need to see, need to say, need to be something beautiful I can't get today out of my mind Need to say, need to call, need to love someone beautiful A day like today has stained my eyes

he's saying that he feels the need to say and be something worthwhile for the person that he loves, because to him, they're worth it. the third and fourth line mean to me that he sees them as beautiful and perfect and how the day spent with them couldn't get anymore perfect, because they spent it together.

And all I ever say and all I ever do Is just a message to you And all I ever play are the cards you gave me It's just my version of the truth

the first two lines of this stanza are pretty self-explanatory -- everything he does and says is a reflection of how wonderful the person he loves is. in the third and fourth, i think he's trying to say that "all i ever say about you is what i think is amazing and true to your divine beauty and character" (maybe i'm reading a little too much into this one)
