Q&A
Your New Name (Hey Annalise) Lyrics
stayed awake for fifteen hours,
waiting on your reply
so i went outside to kill my lungs
and to kiss the night goodbye.
thought about your favorite sweater,
now i'm wishing it was at our feet.
if i could change one thing about you,
i'd call you annalise,
cause' it's better than jen.
hey annalise,
wont you come with me to central park?
we could catch a cab
or stray from wheels and walk this boulevard.
you don't respond,
you're gonna end up dull,
much like your parents are.
hey annalise, don't you ever feel the need to leave?
that's me.
scared of what you people will think.
well i'm your favorite second rate singer
holding out both my hands
i'm cursed with the voice of a kid
and pent up three word commands.
so tie the rope,
tap the brake,
cause a scene.
whatever keeps me in control.
because these bones have grown tiresome
and cant seem to hold my soul,
my whole heart,
it's a joke.
hey annalise,
wont you cross my mind on a stampede ride?
screw hollywood,
cause we've got better things to do than fake our lives.
but you don't respond,
you're gonna end up dull
so won't you give up your birthright?
hey annalise,
don't you ever feel the need to leave?
that's me. that's me.
scared of what you people will think.
well i'm alone,
and i want something real.
not a name.
i need something to feel.
i want the girl who won't dissapear.
oh, i can see her in dark and dull colors,
but coming in clear.
here she comes.
here she comes.
here she comes.
and there she goes.

"so tie the rope, tap the brake, cause a scene."
"so let’s cause a scene. clap our hands and stomp our feet or something" ~The First Single~
"Just tie the rope and kick the chair." ~Tie The Rope~
"Ill tap the break while you crack the window" ~Tune Out~
Thought it was funny that its like three songs mixed into three lines.
he said on stage this song was sort of about this old two year relationship he had. he also said he did not mean to offend anyone who is named jen.
the way he sings "i'm alone" is beautiful
it's not funny at all. the fact that he's using lyrics from three of his songs, he did it on purpose...
"well i'm your favorite second rate singer holding out both my hands i'm cursed with the voice of a kid and pent up three word commands."
and then he goes on to list his "three word commands"...because he uses those a lot, three word commands.
my name is annelise! i like this song. hehe
I know he did it on purpose, I meant funny/cool.
I find it funny that he says "I'm cursed with the voice of a kid" because Nate has an unusually high voice for a guy.
Also, when he says "pent up three word commands," "tie the rope" "tap the break" and "cause a scene" all have three words in them. And those are his most well known phrases in his music.
But maybe that was obvious? I don't know.
"three word commands" Tie the rope, tap the break and cause a scene are three worded named songs, and are the Format's most well known songs. I think Nate's making a joke out of his second-rate singing.
OMG MY NAME IS ANNALISE THAT IS THE CRAZIEST SHIT
My name is Annelise (pronounced like it has an "a") and when i first heard this song, it actually kinda scared me. Haha. Never heard my name in a song before !
dissatisfaction. that's what this one is all about. He's not happy with his current relationship, or his legacy of music. (pent up commands, kid voice) He wants to say "screw it" and run away from caring, but he still feels tied to the world and worries about what other people will think. I love the end. I love the whole song, actually. I LOVE THE FORMAT. RIP. my favorite band forever.
