I've always thought Chris put a lot into his lyricism. This song clearly plays on the idea of a biological father and a father of the Church, and sort of denies the idea of a tie to either of them. More generally, it plays on the idea of family as an institution, and how society dictates how we behave within that institution. But then it's like, what if we don't relate with that for whatever reason? For example, say you come from a bad family that brings you nothing but unhappiness? It's interesting to think about.
He seems to actually play on that idea a lot in Cursed lyrics, and even in his stuff in Burning Love.
yup i agree I think 1974 is the year of the singers birth, so the song can be taken as a telling of his coming to existence. I thought at one time it was about the jonestown massacre but I think that happened in 1978
