A Ribbon Lyrics
1, 2, 3, 4
I'd like to sing to you if you'd like me to
I'd like to sing to you if you'd like me to
I'd like to sing, sing, sing, sing, sing to you
Alone
And I'd like to dance with you if you'd like me to
I'd like to dance with you if you'd like me to
I'd like to dance, dance, dance, dance, dance with you
Alone
I'd like to sleep with you if you'd like me to
I'd like to sleep with you if you'd like me to
I'd like to sleep, sleep, sleep, sleep, sleep with you
Alone
Ribbons around the fumes
We'll be sleeping soon
Ribbons around the fumes
We'll be sleeping soon
Ribbons around those fumes
Alone
I'd like to sing to you if you'd like me to
I'd like to sing, sing, sing, sing, sing to you
Alone
I'd like to dance with you if you'd like me to
I'd like to dance, dance, dance, dance, dance with you
Alone
I'd like to sleep with you if you'd like me to
I'd like to sleep, sleep, sleep, sleep, sleep with you
Alone
We'll be sleeping soon
Ribbons around the fumes
We'll be sleeping soon
Ribbons around those fumes
Alone

this song seems in tone to be very melancholy, like he doesn't expect the person he's singing for to actually want him to do any of these things... but at the same time, there's some sort of sensuality in the way he sings the lines. i think that's because on one hand he knows it's futile to utter these thoughts to the person, but he also greatly desires these things to transpire, and you can hear that in his voice.
the ribbons around the fumes i think are ribbons of smoke curling around the flame of his desire for the person... and the sleeping soon may be because they part soon after he sings this, or he gets his way and sleeps with the person... the way i think the song ends really depends on my mood at the time of listening. sometimes he wins, sometimes he loses horribly.
i love songs that have a storyline in a way like that(in my mind, that is)
the video for this song is so amazing:

i'm in love with the banhart!
this song is so simple yet so effective... beautiful
does anybody else get the crazy murderer feeling from this song? I feel like it's about unrequited love. & then he kills her; gas leak or maybe burns the house down around them. something romantic.
the repetition and outward simplicity of this song are its biggest strengths. the imagery in the last verse provides such nice contrast. yep, definitely in love with this song.
Outstanding track; simplicity was never this good. Just perfect, this album.
I was always enthralled and confused by this song. I love it - it's amazing for when I can't fall asleep; it's pure lullaby. But the last part confuses me: "ribbons around the fumes/we'll be sleeping soon" - I could never figure out what that part meant.
This is going to sound really strange, but this song makes me feel really attracted to him. I think it's just the intimacy of the whole thing, it feels like he's singing just to you - it's an expression of respect, he's asking permission for everything before he does it, and that's really gentlemanly...it's just a cool song.
:*) I love hippies.
