I think he's lamenting the complexities of the modern world and how they infringe on a person's piece of mind. How it's very hard to just enjoy the simple things in life anymore.
this reminds me of when i was younger and went to the city for the first time. Being from a small town i was amazed about how all the people ignored me.(in my town if you walk by someone you say hi) they were all "dry and boring" and because of this i wanted nothing to do with their huge buildings and business suites.
