Certain words in uncertain times Lyrics

While forever seems to take its time
We're still standing here in line waiting for the sun to rise
As she looks on she's so confused
Her heart is lonely broken and bruised
A closed circle with no more room for one more, Screams "to hell with you"

What's wrong with this picture?
What's wrong with this picture?
Did you ever stop to think a thief in the night has come to steal your loved ones?
Did you ever take the time to see the world around us is falling apart?

Eyes closed
We've all had our eyes closed
Our hands behind our back we run and hide
From everything that moves
From everything that might put out this little light of mine

What's wrong with this picture?
What's wrong with this picture?
Did you ever stop to think a thief in the night has come to steal your loved ones?
Did you ever take the time to see the world around us is falling apart?

Where did our hero go and who did he dine with?
We say the world's gonna end in the end anyway
and anyway
I'm ok so it doesn't concern me

And did you ever stop to think a thief in the night has come to steal your loved ones?
And did you ever take the time to see the world around us is falling apart?

What is "Certain Worlds in Uncertain Times" about and why is it so damn catchy?

It is about a situation reflecting how people who think they are going to heaven and have it made push others out of their little circle of friends and how they are missing the point. The question the chorus asks is "is there anyone who will do ANYTHING about it?". It's funny how it turned out because the lyrics are so serious and the music has that little synth line that's almost making fun of this certain group of people. Anyway, well... that song in particular had an extra dose of catchy since we all ate canned spinach every morning of that week and worked out like more than anyone ever.

I don’t know This Providence’s ideological standings, but to me this seems like a commentary on the mentality of certain Christians, at least certain groups of Christians who are somewhat elitist and close-minded.

The first line about standing in line is possibly a reference to how many people wait to die simply to get into Heaven. They are waiting for the “forever” of Heaven, but it seems to “take its time” because they are simply waiting to die.

Though the “she” in the song is “confused,” “broken,” and “bruised,” the “closed circle” (aka the particular Christian sect) secludes her, thus another commentary on how some groups tend to ignore helping some people.

So, then the singer asks, “What’s wrong with this picture?” The “thief in the night” symbolizes the group who has “stolen” the minds of his loved ones, when he is sure that this cannot be right. This group of people are also so wrapped up in themselves that they don’t “take the time to see the world around us is falling apart.”

The next verse I feel is taken from the point of view of a member of the group who has realized what the singer is saying is faulty in their way of life. The person realizes that “we’ve all had our eyes closed.” But, even though he realizes what is wrong, the person continues to stay away from anything that might “put out this little light of mine” (aka their comfortable ideology), even if it makes sense.

The next line is clearly references Jesus at the Last Supper. The singer is asking where he has gone, commenting that the beliefs of such Christian groups have gone so far away from Jesus’ original teachings.

The last line is sarcastically restating the first line’s comment on how these people selfishly wait for Heaven, not caring about the world around them. “As long as I get in Heaven, who cares if the world is destroyed, at least I’m okay.”

Thoughts?
