I don't think it's about a breakup. I think it's about his best friend and him are drifting apart.

i agree with die_ambrosia. but this song could still be about a breakup or a best friend, or anything like that. just a friendship/relationship that's drifting apart.
"It's not like were over is it? It's not like we'll never be together" this line confuses me a little because if it was about a breakup, and he says "it's not like we'll never be together?" then doesn't that mean that they were never together?
so i personally think this is about a relationship that ALMOST happened, but didn't because they just starting going their separate ways before they could be together.
Self explainable, some kind of relationship is drifting. Maybe an off and on girlfriend. All I know is this song is great
