You and a Promise Lyrics
i think this one is about how a woman either kicked him out or broke up with him and now he wants her to remember that she made a promise to him and he wants her to keep it
This talks about a girl being pregnant, and her partner not committing to her and keeping their "promise". So now she doesnt know him anymore. . .
I agree with Mz.Christine731. The whole "being late" thing really clued me in on the pregnancy. Being late with her period what was I thought of it as.
And the phone call with him saying "I'll always be there..." I think the boyfriend wants to help, but from afar. It seems like he's treating the unborn child like it isn't his, but he wants to act like his girlfriend's close friend and still help out with the child. "I'll watch him while you get groceries, but don't expect me to pay for his daycare bills."
...At least, that's how I see it...
I was at a Howie Day show in Atlanta in July and Howie prefaced this song by saying it was about an abortion.
I saw Howie for the 3rd time a couple months ago when he came to the ATL too. Not the best show I've seen by him, but still pretty damn good. He mentioned before he performed this song that this is actually about a girl who has an abortion. I thought it was a little twisted, but the more I listened to it the more it made sense. Just goes to show you how crazy some of Howie's songs are. I mean, come on, I love him, but he's a little off the wall. Either way, thought fans might appreciate being able to understand another one of his amazing songs.
I know this is not right, but cosidering its about abortion... it sounds like he says "I dont want it anymore" instead of "I don't want you anywmore"- but I know that's not right. Selective hearing, I guess.
I guess this song could be about an aboriton...but i think it can also be about any relationship..for when you are together intimately your bodies make a promise and that promise binds you and when someone feels differently it brings about nervous tension.l..and i think that this song has a sort of nervous feeling to it,.
Whoo! That just gave me goose bumps! I mean, I've always loved this song but it never really made any sense to me.
Thanks for mentioning abortion. It all ties together so perfectly now. I could never really understand who he was talking to or what that whole last little conversation was about.
"I'll always be there for you, call me anytime" [The man is calling since the woman has rejected him from her life.]
"I don't mean to offend, the voice on the other end is a stranger to me" [This is the woman answering with only one line. In this one line, she summarizes their relationship. She wants nothing to do with him.]
How he sings that last line is just so powerful. Man, awesome delivery and lyrics!
