anyway this song to me is about being independent of everything society wants/expects out of you and growing in your own direction and becoming everything you want/expect out of yourself.

I like what RollingRock said about the lyrics. This song is about being your own person and being true to yourself. To let society and other people control and dictate who you are would be like wearing shackles and being imprisoned with no say on your life.
