The Galleria Lyrics

I'm gonna miss the Galleria.
It was the only place to go this side of town.
Goodbye to the Galleria.
I just heard today they're going to tear it down.
And without the Galleria.
Where would all the valley girls go to hang out?

Well, it's been around since 1981.
And since then that's where we went to have fun.
Well, we all took the mall for granted.
And they could not pay the bills.
And the day it's not there when I drive by.
Well, that's the day the 80's died.

I'm gonna miss the Galleria.
It was the only place to go this side of town.
Goodbye to the Galleria.
I just heard today they're going to tear it down.
And without the Galleria.
Where would all the valley girls go to hang out?

Well, business had been slipping more and more.
Since the Northridge quake of 1994.
It's the place where they filmed Valley Girl.
And Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

Where would all the valley girls go to hang out?

In the San Fernando Valley, just outside of Los Angeles, there was once a mall named the Sherman Oaks Galleria. It was the catalyst for 80's culture as well as the filming location of such acclaimed 80's hits as "Valley Girl" and "Fast Times at Ridgemont High".

I remember it well, actually. It had a very generic mall feeling to it, but yet, it had a character. Everyone seemed to rally around it as being the main representation of the 80's and teen culture. In fact, many of the teenagers living in the western San Fernando valley hung out there, but a lot of the time, they didn't shop there.

In the 90's, the mall continued it's existence until 1994, when the devastating Northridge Earthquake occurred. The mall sustained damage and as a result, didn't do the same business it did before the quake.

Finally, in the late 90's, it was decided to close down the mall and build an outdoor shopping promenade. It was lights out for the Sherman Oaks Galleria and the end of an era for the children of the 80's.

It's a simple song, but at it's heart, it could happen to our malls that we hang out around. I am a mallrat at heart and I know that any day, my mall could suffer the same fate as the Galleria. It may sound quite stupid at first, but if the mall were to close it's doors, it'd be the end of an era for me and my friends.

We laughed, we cried, we ruled the mall. And if it were to close down, that's when our era would end.

Great song by a great band.
