anyways. i like this song ;) and i dont think it's about a loser. i think its just about a guy who's down on his luck (i.e. maybe the girl you he likes doesnt feel the same way? someone else has filled his shoes?). i think thats something a lot of people can relate to.
cap in hand is an old way of saying you are being humble possibly after realising you have wronged someone.
He's walked out on someone he loves, took some time to think it over and realised his mistake and come back "cap in hand" to ask for forgiveness........... but as jcaudio says just a little too late.
The symbolical "death" (ending) of a marriage by means of infidelity. The guy finds out that his wife has been cheating on him. The synth part at the end of the song is very funeral like.
I'm surprised no-one else thought of a ghost when looking at this song! I think the lyrics could easily be about a ghost, although Ian Anderson has said before that he wants his lyrics to be interpreted in different ways by different people, so maybe it's about a ghost, and also unrequited love, depending on how you look at it.

2nd - This is an amazing song. In case you are wondering, the amazing first guitar riff was created by playing a fairly simple lead riff with a lot of distortion through a delay effects box set to a really long delay. After it was recorded, it was all turned backward so that the fade in, referse echo effect was created.
The middle is the genius of David Palmer, arranging the hell out the song. His work on this Songs from the wood and the other albums from this era was amazing.
Too bad the song itself is kinda depressing since it is about a LOSER such as you might find on the Philadelphia Eagles Football team.
It's really unfair to judge a song by the football team of the person who posted the lyrics. Anyway, I live in New Jersey, where the NY Giants play in East Rutherford.
