A New Day Yesterday Lyrics
My first and last time with you
and we had some fun.
wenT walking through the trees, yeah!
And then I kissed you once.
Oh I want to see you soon
but I wonder how.
It was a new day yesterday
but it's an old day now.
Spent a long time looking
for a game to play.
My luck should be so bad now
to turn out this way.
Oh I had to leave today
just when I thought I'd found you.
It was a new day yesterday
But it's an old day now.
and we had some fun.
wenT walking through the trees, yeah!
And then I kissed you once.
Oh I want to see you soon
but I wonder how.
It was a new day yesterday
but it's an old day now.
for a game to play.
My luck should be so bad now
to turn out this way.
Oh I had to leave today
just when I thought I'd found you.
It was a new day yesterday
But it's an old day now.

To me this is about having had an experience one was looking for, but the 'next day', reflecting and realizing it was elusive, 'wondering how' he might ever get back there. Could have been a woman who he could only be with one time, for whatever reason. Could also be a metaphor for having a spiritual experience that seemed to change everything (i.e. a 'new day')... but losing sight of it as the days pass ('old day now'). In both cases, I've been there. And this song has always tended to make me very emotional for that reason.
Much of the Stand Up album is about Ian resenting the constant travel and work-load of being a rock star. This song talks about how he's constantly away from his new girlfriend (and future ex-wife), Jeanine.
"It was a new day yesterday but it's an old day now" It was kind of thrilling not knowing when or how long the two would see each other, but now it's growing old and Ian just wants to be with his new love.
"Oh I had to leave today just when I thought I'd found you" Even when the two are together, it's an all-too-brief moment as Ian has to go back on the road again.
THANX SO MUCH 4 ADDING 2 HIS GENIUS W/YR STUPID I/NET SLANG!!!!! HAFORLLOL!
Anyway, on a serious note... I don't know the history behind this song, but it just seems to me about recounting memories. Perhaps of Glory. This might be an anthemic attempt at uplifting England.
This band always had diamonds in their eyes...Especially in their youth.
