Day of the Eagle Lyrics

I saw a light, just up ahead
But I couldn't seem to rise up from my bed
I'm not alone, and then I am
People seem to think I'm superman
But I watch for the love
I'm living in the day of the eagle, the eagle not the, dove

Its like a weight, that brings me down
Befire I move, I'm on the ground
Its in my mind, it's in my soul
Its telling me the things I can't control
Its a watch for the love
Living in the day of the eagle, eagle not the, dove

Another day, another night
I want to love, they want to fight
I need the time, I got to be alone
I got to meet a lover on my own
I watch for the love
Living in the day of the eagle, eagle not the, dove

to me, there are two possible meanings:

1) a typical break up song where there's been a lot of fighting and he's down on the hope that there's really love in the world; or

2) it's an anti-society song that reprimands society for promoting hate instead of love

either way the eagle represents the bad and vicious and the dove represents the good and loving.

Adlertag; German for "Day of the Eagle", was code for August 13, 1940, the day Nazis planned to knock out British radars at the Battle of Britain. They chose eagle because of the predator nature. Dove obviously is bird of peace. Trower was stating he was truly looking for love, not wanting to end up in another fight - another war. He was wanting to break loose out of the predatory mode and find love in a woman on his own time - to enter into a peace mode with one he truly loves.

If you did not know better you could mistake Trower for Hendrix at times- some of the guitar work is very similar and I guess that's why Trower is ranked so highly as one of the worlds great players.

@Addo What an absurd comment. You crap all over Trower as if he's only successful by sounding like someone else. Trower is ranked highly as a great player because--oddly enough--he's a great player. Not because he sounds like that other guitar player that I truly feel was never a great player at all.

@Addo Trower is indeed a great player on his own. Having said that, playing a white Stratocaster tuned down a half step much of the time, playing through a Marshall Plexi for dirty and often using a Fender blackface amp for clean and studio, using a Wah, a univibe, a fuzz and an Octave divider just may have been a coincidence. Perhaps Hendrix didn't influence him at all.

Back to reality! Of course he was heavily influenced by Hendrix, but what great blues rock player of the late 60s with Procal Harem and the early 70s as Robin Trower wasn't...

I see it as, "The Day of the Eagle" an Era in life that represents a young man ljvigorously searching for Love where as an older man, after going through the Eagle stage, might gently look for love like a dove.
