pretty sure "john" refers to Lennon, who has obviously been a huge influence on Devendra's music.
This song gives me a very nostalgic feeling.
It literally seems to be an ode to a long lost great friend. As he sings, he's reminiscing on the good times while contemplating the thought of revisiting his old friend. He also appears to ponder what exactly happened that caused so much lost time to pass between them.
I love the way he describes his experiences and the visually enticing moments that trigger memories of his friend.

My favorite from rejoicing in the hands. The lyrics may seem silly but they do have meaning upon close inspection:
the lemon tree it laughs at me it's growin' beautifully the little vine it won't unwind and it'll wrap your whole in time
This verse is the most interesting in the song. Devendra notices the lemon tree tree "laughing" at him because it grows so well, whereas perhaps Devendra feels he isn't growing up the way he should. The line about the small vine wrapping "your whole" in time is a bit melancholy: nature will move on after you have died, covering up all you've done.

i think that "will" isnt an actual person but a feeling and the song is about devendra's will to become a musician(like when he sang songs on people's anwering machines). the vine represents how his dream consumed him and maybe the laughing lemon tree could symolize people discouraging him along the way.
