The sound of white Lyrics

Like a freeze-dried rose, you will never be,
what you were, what you were to me in memory.
But if I listen to the dark,
you'll embrace me like a star,
envelope me, envelope me...
If things get real for me down here,
promise to take me to before you went away -
if only for a day.
If things get real for me down here,
promise to take me back to the tune
we played before you went away.

And if I listen to, the sound of white,
sometimes I hear your smile, and breath your light.
Yeah if I listen to, the sound of white ..
You're my mystery. One mystery. My mystery. One mystery.

My silence solidifies,
until that hollow void erases you,
erases you so I can't feel at all.
But if I never fell again, at least that nothingness
will end the painful dream, of you and me...
If things get real for me down here, promise to take me to
before you went away, if only for a day.
If things get real for me down here, promise to take me back to
the tune we played before you went away.

And if I listen to, the sound of white
sometimes I hear your smile, and breath your light.
Yeah if I listen to, the sound of white
sometimes I hear your smile, and breath your light.
And if I listen to, the sound of white.

I knelt before some strangers face,
I'd never have the courage or belief to trust this place,
But I dropped my head, 'cos it felt like lead,
And I'm sure I felt your fingers through my hair...

And if I listen to, the sound of white sometimes
I hear your smile, and breathe your light.
Yeah if I listen to, the sound of white.
The sound of white,
The sound of white,
The sound of white.

I love this song. It has so much depth and meaning to it. This is a heartfelt song about someone close to you that you love moving away from you, someone that is deeply trusted and missed. It also shows a sense of pain and resistance to move on. My favourite line is "Like a freeze-dried rose, you will never be, what you were, what you were to me in memory." It's saying nothing will be the same. I also love the line "But if I never fell again, at least that nothingness will end the painful dream, of you and me... " This once again shows that she is holding onto the dream of being together. This song is my favourite out of the cd and I can really relate to it :(

The phrase 'the sound of white' i believe refers to the phenomenon of 'white noise' associated with the afterlife.

i totally agree with lauraloo except that i think its about losing someone close in that they died. the line "If things get real for me down here.." sort of alluded me to this meaning of the song. i always thought it was a beautiful song but i only just listened to it properly and came up with that idea. and i reckon that it ties in completely with all that lauraloo has said above this. i think the sound of white is a metaphor for someone's spirit.

For me it's about holding onto someone lost, how many things remind you of them - especially the music you shared and enjoyed together. It's a song for people to listen to so they can say when they 'Listen to The Sound Of White' they can remember the memories of their loved one whos passed. It's a very moving song and one most people can relate to because most have lost someone. The question I have is who is it about for Missy Higgins, who is she missing............

this song is simply divine.. and what i loved was how at her concert in adelaide everyone was cheering so loudly when she introduced it that she had to sing a different one and come back because obviously it means alot to her and causes her tonnes of emotion.. and the second time around, the crowd was dead silent.. shivers she is amazing.

i love this song. it is amazing.

i can relate to this song.. in my own way. to me its about my dad. "if things get real for me down here, promise to take me to before you went away - if only for a day. If things get real for me down here, promise to take me back to the tune we played before you went away.

And if I listen to, the sound of white, sometimes I hear your smile, and breath your light."

it just makes me think about him in heaven and saying that if i get to serious or too caught up then come back and remind me how it used to be..

When I saw that there were only 9 comments on this song I was devastated because I thought that they would just be pointless comments about nothing, but these have been useful.

I think it is about someone that has passed away, but one line has proven hard to interpret for me:

"My silence solidifies, until that hollow void erases you, erases you so I can't feel at all. But if I never feel again, at least that nothingness will end the painful dream, of you and me..."

It's always been my favourite line, but if this song is about a person who passed away and not a relationship which has ended (which was my initial interpretation) then what is it about?

The best idea I have is that the girl hasn't spoken enough about it (My silence solidifies) and she hasn't received proper closure. So instead of moving on after the death she has simply tried to block it out of her memory (Until that hollow void erases you). She is only numbing her self from feelings of pain associated with the death (So I can't feel at all), she is willing to numb herself as long as she doesn't have to feel the pain of loss (At least that nothingness will end the painful dream of you and me)

What do you think?
