Stars Fell on Alabama Lyrics
you looked real calm as we made our way up the walk
there were lazy kisses, hands brushing and small talk
the moon was high, your smooth face was dry, and the kudzu grew
and the stars fell on alabama
and your eyes filled up with light
and the stars fell on alabama
the warm earth underneath us gave way
dry grass crinkled like paper as a breeze came in across the bay
cold clean water nearby, glimmered in your eyes
and your pistol glistened.
and the stars fell on alabama
and your eyes filled up with light
and the stars fell on alabama
but if you think i'll take a bullet for you - you're dreaming.
there were lazy kisses, hands brushing and small talk
the moon was high, your smooth face was dry, and the kudzu grew
and the stars fell on alabama
and your eyes filled up with light
and the stars fell on alabama
dry grass crinkled like paper as a breeze came in across the bay
cold clean water nearby, glimmered in your eyes
and your pistol glistened.
and your eyes filled up with light
and the stars fell on alabama

When ever I buy a new TMG ablum, I try to listen attentively, but with the "but if you think i'll take a bullet for you - you're dreaming"
I bursted out laughing and almost drove off the road.
I want to know what is going on that the song is describing. Also, is it pistol, or pistil?
I'm pretty sure this is an allusion/anthesis to the famous jazz standard "Stars Fell on Alabama" (look it up on Youtube, here are the lyrics: http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/63975 ).
You can see it in the "lazy kisses, hand brushing" or in the brilliant juxtaposition of "cold clean water nearby, glimmered in your eyes and your pistol glistened" and "I can't forget the glamor, your eyes held a tender light". There's also a possible juxtapostion between the dry grass/warm earth and the field of white, if it means snow in the jazz song.
first song I heard by the mountain goats, I was hooked ever since.
the last line makes the song. i get sick of all the bull shit love songs, this just seems a little more real to me.
I think it's about a girl who tricked her guy into walking out onto a deserted field for a romantic day of relaxation only to pull a gun on him.
PS: Also, I agree with cfonts.
(About that this is the meaning of the song, intentionally not a cheesy love song- I don't think cheesy love songs are that bad)
