Tallahassee Lyrics

Window facing an ill-kept front yard
Plums on the tree heavy with nectar
Prayers to summon the destroying angel
Moon stuttering in the sky like film stuck in a projector
And you
You

Twin prop airplanes passing loudly overhead
Road to the airport two lanes clear
Half the whole town gone for the summer
Terrible silence coming down here
And you
You

There is no deadline
There is no schedule
There is no plan we can fall back on
The road this far can't be retraced
There is no punch line anybody can tack on
There are loose ends by the score
What did I come down here for?
You
You

I absolutly love this song and appriciate it more than most I being that I live in Tallahassee.

When after describing "Half the whole town gone for the summer" and then adding "There is no deadline/ There is no schedule" the pictues he paints musically along with such simple words of Tallahassee's mood when empty during the slack months is so perfectly accurate...I love it.

Has anyone else noticed that the opening bass line sounds a lot like the tape noise on his old recordings? It has that same driving rhythm, and it opens up the song, just like the tape noise did on the old record. I'm positive that the bass line was deliberately made to sound like that.

Anyone who lives in a college town can relate to the "half the whole town" line.

What did I come down here for? That speaks to everyone in this damn town who moved for a lover, only to have it fall apart.

Crushing. One of his best.

I see, so the album starts at the end, and ends up right back where it started.

Just as Blithium said, it starts at the end. His life is ruined, his life in shambles.
No deadline, no schedule, no way to trace it. Too much shit went on for too long and there's nothing left to do at all, and the person he came down for means nothing to him anymore. I imagine the inspiration for this album came from looking at the old white trash houses with the burned out alcoholics waiting around for life to end, and wondering what happened to in their lives to end up like this.

There are two ways to interpret this song.

  1. At the end of their story "The road this far can't be retraced. There is no punch line anybody can tack on" or 2. The couple have just bought their house and on their fist night they are beginning to realize the truly horrific mistake they both have made.
