Dirty Dream Number Two Lyrics
I'm lucky, I can open the door and I can walk down the street
Unlucky, I've got nowhere to go and so I follow my feet
A choice is facing you, a healthy dose of pain
A choice is facing you as you stare through the rain
A choice is facing you but I choose to refrain for today
Tomorrow we'll be back in trouble again
Dream one, you had a whole lot of fun with a comedian
Stop short of going all the way, you'll have to make it someday
Why is this happening to you, you're not a child
Why is this happening, you've too much on your mind
Things creep up on you when you are fast asleep
You are dreaming, you are sleepy
You are stuck to the sheets
In a town so small there's no escaping you
In a town so small there's no escape from view
In a town so small there's nothing left to do
Dream two you couldn't see her face, but you saw everything else
Dream two was pretty special, easily beats loving yourself
Could you put a name to someone else's sigh?
Could you put a face to someone else's eyes?
Is it someone that you'd maybe recognise?
But it all fades into morning when you open your eyes
Unlucky, I've got nowhere to go and so I follow my feet
A choice is facing you, a healthy dose of pain
A choice is facing you as you stare through the rain
A choice is facing you but I choose to refrain for today
Tomorrow we'll be back in trouble again
Stop short of going all the way, you'll have to make it someday
Why is this happening, you've too much on your mind
Things creep up on you when you are fast asleep
You are dreaming, you are sleepy
You are stuck to the sheets
In a town so small there's no escape from view
In a town so small there's nothing left to do
Dream two was pretty special, easily beats loving yourself
Could you put a name to someone else's sigh?
Could you put a face to someone else's eyes?

But it all fades into morning when you open your eyes

In some sense the meaning here is obvious, a quick tour through the noctural fantasies of Mr. Murdoch. Indeed, while he's literally "stuck to the sheets" after these seemingly frequent incidents, there's a delicate overlapping of reality and dream taking. 'Facing a choice', he chooses to procrastine, making "Why is this happening to you, we're not a child?" especially revealing. Yes, it's awkward physically, but it's also an admission of guilt: I need to grow up and, in a sense, face the "healthy dose of pain."
I think the fact that Stuart Murdoch can write a song like this and still make it so good is quite impressive.
Also, i thinkk it's good that Murdoch writes about stuff that isn't normally in songs. It shows that he writes about what he wants to write about and doesn't care about being judged by anyone else. Also, it gives normal people something different but something they can relate to all the same.
Well, some normal people ;).
I love the way he says "but you saw EVERYthing else".
Unless I'm crazy the lines:
Intellectual and perspiring/Dirty dream number two
Do not appear on the album version of this song.
And I should add that:
Could you put a name to someone elses sigh? Could you put a face to someone elses eyes? Is it someone that you'd maybe recognise? But it all fades into morning when you open your eyes
Just kill me when I'm feeling bad about love... aaaaah!
Is that Kelly McDonald talking on this song, or am just mixing up my Glasgow accents.
I'm pretty sure that is Isobel Campbell. She's the band's cellist.

belle and sebastian are so filthy but i know what hes talking about... you have a naughty dream about somebody and you wake up and you sort of forget who it was and who did what to who and youre trying to piece it together but you almost dont want to find out who it was in case it's like, your best friend or somebody awkward like that.
also, amazing strings at the end of this
no, 'Intellectual and perspiring / Dirty dream number two' doesnt get said in the song. not the album version at least. those lines arent even in the liner notes.
Agreed--I just edited the lyrics above and took it out.

within the last ten seconds if you listen closely you can barely hear something being said... I guess it could be the "intellectual and perspiring" line, I just can't tell (that's not where it supposedly is anyway though)
It sounds like the lead singer (Stuart Murdoch) saying something to the band to close out the song... I can't tell what is said, but it sounds vaguely like "that's it."

I never know what to do with the nasty side of b&s. Actually, the better term would be swedish's "filthy".
However, I love this song. I just wish it didn't make me seem perverted or anything.
