A Summer Wasting Lyrics

Summer in winter
Winter in springtime
You heard the birds sing
Everything will be fine

I spent the summer wasting
The time was passed so easily
But if the summer's wasted
How come that I could feel so free
I spent the summer wasting
The sky was blue beyond compare
A photograph of myself
Is all I have to show for

Seven years of river walkways
Seven weeks of staying up all night

I spent the summer wasting
The time was passed so pleasantly
Say cheerio to books now
The only things I'll read are faces
I spent the summer wasting
Under a canopy of

Seven weeks of reading papers
Seven weeks of river walkways
Seven weeks of feeling guilty
Seven weeks of staying up all night

Summer in winter
Winter is springtime
You heard the bird say
Everything will be fine

It sort of makes me think of the feeling you get in your summer holidays when you've got coursework or whatever but you can't bring tear yourself from the fun you're having. Everyone tells you you're wasting you're time etc and makes you feel guilty but you're soon back enjoying yourself again.

Golly, you're all... a bit silly aren't you? I don't believe this song is, as you've all said, one of those 'good times' summer songs. "Feeling Guilty." ... My reckoning is this song is about exactly that - a summer, not wasted on 'good times', but wasted. Spent... river walkways, reading papers, feeling guilty... etc... Which is why I find it says so much about the wretched way I choose to live my life.

This is so incredibly true to life. Beautiful song.

I think 'seven years' might be referring to Stuart's long period of chronic fatigue syndrome in the late 80s, that left him able only to sit in parks and cafes all day (for seven years).

This song has is about two of my favorite things...summer time, and spending holidays with friends. I think there may have been an error in one of the lyrics though. I.e 'seven years of river walk ways' instead of seven weeks. Because the song is about the wasted summer holiday that was seven weeks. Its like when the beatles recorded the wrong name in their song 'oble de obla da' but left it as it was because recording is so time consuming and expensive...

I love this song. It explains my summer perfectly. I spent it in Alaska working with a friend, and it was the best time of my entire life. I just love how it's about a summer that you can't ever go back for and that no one really knows how it was like, and the only thing you have to show for it is a photograph and memories. Great song. One of my favorites.

Yes, I agree with you duckduckmoose.

The second bit is actually:

'Seven years of river walkways Seven weeks of staying up all night'

But that aside, this is one of the best B&S song ever, it fits so perfectly into The Boy With The Arab Strap. The whole album has that sort of mellow feeling with quite dark subject matter. He spent the summer wasted.

yea the first 'seven weeks of river walkways' is 'seven years'.

i do like the song a lot. i agree with lapinfourrure, he was wasted. i wish i knew what he meant by river walkways, but i can only think of something along the lines of an adventure...but maybe that's what i want it to mean. ha.

great. wonderful.
