I think it's about an odd couple, that everyone made fun of. All the brutality they had to endure. Then one of them did something wrong - went back on the ideals or kissed someone else, whatever. Hence the 'you said you're sorry.'
This song is so amazing. Short and sweet and so pure. It's about love- but it doesn't have to be about couples or whatever. It could be fraternal, and about two friends, or lovers, and yes I agree, their survival. They outsmarted society and here they are. Maybe one is apologizing to the other for what happened to them.
