Favours Lyrics
Started to fight
But I took off in fright
I could not believe
That she didn't chase me
Climbed on her back
With an ambush attack
Down came the force
And down came the briefcase
Quiet before
Then you came to the fore
Not unsurprised
Still happy to see you
You know there's no chance
Not a sniff if romance
And I'm thinking this is the end of the line
And you're feeling fine
And you're looking for favours
Returned for your crime
Help me to stand
Help me to say
That I don't want to be here
I don't want to stay
I just want away
A hit for a feel
With unconquered appeal
You locked the door
And I started to tremble
Touch without touch
Are we feeling too much
I can't decide
If I'm feeling able
Eyes that don't meet
Are we too scared to speak
I can't provide
What you are requesting
You know there's no chance
Not a sniff if romance
And I'm thinking this is the end of the line
And you're feeling fine
And you're looking for favours
Returned for your crime
Help me to stand
Help me to say
That I don't want to be here
I don't want to stay
I just want away
And I, I'll try to feel fine
While I'm taking orders from bottles of wine
Help me to stand
Help me to say
That I don't want to be here
I just want away
Touch without touch
Feel without feel
Are we both really hoping
This just isn't real
Help me to stand
Help me to say
That I don't to be here
I don't want to stay
I can't give today
But I took off in fright
I could not believe
That she didn't chase me
With an ambush attack
Down came the force
And down came the briefcase
Then you came to the fore
Not unsurprised
Still happy to see you

Oh god, I just simply love this song, I just wonder why it's (The Delgados I mean) not popular. Poor Indie bands.
But I definitely love the part "And I, I'll try to feel fine while I'm taking orders from bottles wine"
That's by far my favorite line as well... I've been caught singing this song quite loud with headphones on while walking the dogs, getting the odd look from my neighbors.

to me it's about a relationship failing with the person, and knowing it won't work out, but at the same time wanting the person to follow you when you leave, and hoping somehow the person can make things right, or at least to help you let go of them.
basically, the person talking seems to love the other person, but is struggling so much with it that they think it's better for her to leave... but she's having a hell of a time leaving at all.
Edited by delial on May 28 2008, at 02:57AM

This song is reeeeeeally sombre. It details someone's girlfriend finding out that her boyfriend was either cheating or flirting with someone else, so she decks the girl, but gets freaked and runs off. "Started to fight, but I took off in fright Could not believe that she didn't chase me" The guy meets her back at their place, presumably, and they "make up". "Then you came to the fore Not unsurprised, still happy to see you" But something is clearly dead. They try to have sex, but she can't do it, so she drinks the rest of the night off. "Touch without touch, are we feeling too much? I can't decide if I'm feeing able" "And I, I'll try to feel fine While I'm taking orders from bottles of wine" The fact that this song resonates with me this much says a bit too much about my last relationship, lol.
I think the person who commented the very literal interpretation of- the singer's partner was cheating, she attacked the person who partner was cheating with, she couldn't be with partner despite still feeling love and wanting to forgive, gets drunk- but for years I've always had a much less literal interpretation.
I always thought of it as just general nonsense feelings of being unhappy in a relationship, though I thought this particular song was either about a same sex relationship or perhaps the singer was singing from a different perspective. I always thought "climbed on her back/ with an ambush attack" was more of a metaphor for the singer starting an argument for no reason. I thought "could not believe that she didn't chase me" was how some people expect they can walk away from their partner and the partner will still "chase," want to pursue romantically. I thought bits of the song ("down came the briefcase") were kind of nonsense, like her head is a swirl of feelings and she's just kind of looking at everything in the room to distract herself from her feelings. But, having read that other interpretation, it's more likely that and I had quite the very broad explanation of this when I first started listening to it in my teens! I still like my version though 😅 Absolutely a beautiful song.
Emma Pollock has such a sexy voice that really comes through on this tune ;¬)
