I've known this song for at least 6 years and it took me until now to realize that it's about dating a woman with an avoidant attachment style. "Your face says a full house But I think you’re bluffing" She's leading him on to keep him in the relationship.
"And you starve me" "…you’re just serving me spoonfuls" We've lost the poker metaphor. A bit more direct about how she's withholding her affection
"Because when I start losing Is when I start cheating" I took this to be a reference to cheating in a relationship.
"And when you finally show your cards You’ll be the only one who’s playing" This i believe refers to the pattern of withdrawal — He starts to give up on the relationship (folds) so she finally realizes what she's losing
what a great song. the lyrics are great and the tune is so mellow. 5 stars on the colin meter!
This seems to me to be a weaker set of lyrics but none the less captivating. He has a way of developing music in a way that draws you into a trance and you become his lyrics and his subject from his words originate. flawless artist/poet
