I Do Lyrics

I wanna be much more like you,
You’re effortlessly graceful seam,
That drips from every pore of you,
Where logic cannot intervene.

I wanna take a bath with you,
And wash the chaos from my skin,
I wanna fall in love with you,
So how do we begin?

I wanna be a girl like you,
The way you swing your hips in jeans,
I wanna wear my face like you,
Shiseido, Mac and Maybelline.

I wanna paint the town with you,
And tickle you until you scream,
I wanna fall in love with you,
I wanna say I do.

I wanna say I do (x 4)

I wanna be much more like you,
The way your smile lights up the room,
I’ll kick back and flirt with you,
To jealously, ill stay abused.

This confidence in me and you,
This hope that you and I will bloom,
I wanna fall in love with you,
I wanna say I do.

I wanna say I do (x 4)

The question is; do you?

I think it's an underrated Placebo song and in my opinion it's more than a typical heterosexual love song! It's about a lyrical subject that seems to be male and is dreaming of falling in love with a girl and about all the funny, cute and romantic things they could do. It could be at the begining of a relationship, when a sex affair has potential to become more. But the interesting, seldom discussed verse is:

"I want to be a girl like you The way you swing your hips in jeans I want to wear my face like you Shiseido MAC and Maybelline"

I never found a love song, where the probably male lyrical subject desires a woman and wants to be that woman at the same time: He does not only want to have a personality like her, but literally wants to be feminine, to dress like her etc. So this seemingly ordinary "I want to fall in love" song is very queer and it's not surprising since one of the writers Biran Molko himself is androgynous, feminine and bisexual (and some say genderqueer as well). This song has potential for identification for numerous queer identities: Bisexuals, especially male, feminine performing bisexuals, crossdressers, guydykes (male lesbians), non-binary people, even some trans women at the begining of their transition and finding process could relate to it and everyone who experienced the feeling "I don't know whether I want you or want to be you".

My Interpretation

*Brian Molko, of course!

Okay, i totally think this song is all about a person trying to turn a relationship form lust to love...it depends hwo you take the 'i do' lyric. Its obviously based round a relationship, whether its recirpocal love involved is another story!.

"I wanna fall in love with you, I wanna say I do."

That could either mean that he's totally infatuated with her and that he wants to marry her (he wants to say I do) and reciprocate feelings. OR. it could mean that he doesn't really feel that way, but he wants to fall in love with her, as opposed to having shallow lustful feelings. Thats how I take it lol but feel free to correct my theory. The main lyric which makes me think the relationship is a lustful or superficial one is "I’ll kick back and flirt with you, To jealously, ill stay abused.".

I think genevieve313 is right, the song's about a person you wonder if she shares the feeling you have for her. But I also think the song is about being to shy and scared to tell her, because he's not shure, what she'll say.

i know people are gonna disagree with me, but im allowed my opinion. to be honest i think this song is really bad. i mean, the lryic 'i wanna say i do' is to me a really silly line. it sounds like a 4 year old wrote it. maybe the idea was to sound young and helpless, i dunno, but still.
