I watched you fade away,
into a sea of taillights.
My eyes still strained to this day...
Evidence of who we were,
left here along the way.
I see the truth in the tree.
I’ll free you, fall away.
I’ll free you, fade away. (x 2)
The world just stopped its pull,
and I could almost hear you,
crying out through the noise...
The things I thought I knew,
so close to understanding.
But now I’m dumb to the wise.
I’ll free you, fall away.
I’ll free you, fade away. (x 2)
I see her, perfectly clothed in white...my eyes burn...
I’ll free you, fall away.
I’ll free you, fade away. (x 2)
into a sea of taillights.
My eyes still strained to this day...
Evidence of who we were,
left here along the way.
I see the truth in the tree.
I’ll free you, fade away. (x 2)
and I could almost hear you,
crying out through the noise...
The things I thought I knew,
so close to understanding.
But now I’m dumb to the wise.
I’ll free you, fade away. (x 2)
I’ll free you, fade away. (x 2)

i believe it's about he's trying to be a hero to someone very special to him ( i believe it could be his now wife) and he's trying to be a hero but he just doesn't get it right, realizing "dumb to the wise" he tries and tries and she keeps on slipping away, and he sees, her clothed in white, (which is a metaphor) to the writer, and it hurts him to see her that way.
