End of the Movie Lyrics

People you love
Will turn their backs on you
You'll lose your hair
Your teeth
Your knife will fall out of its sheath
But you still don't like to leave before the end of the movie

People you hate
Will get their hooks into you
They'll pull you down
You'll frown
They'll tar you and drag you through town
But you still don't like to leave before the end of the movie
No, you still don't like to leave before the end of the show

People you hate
Will get their hooks into you
They'll pull you down
You'll frown
They'll tar you and drag you through town
But you still don't like to leave before the end of the movie
No, you still don't like to leave before the end of the show

I think it's a metaphor for LIFE!! Bad things happen, but still we don't want it to end.

This song is about getting old, and the decision old people are confronted with when they get old: “Should I give up?”

People you love / Will turn their backs on you / -- refers to how old people are neglected and seen as a burden.

You'll lose your hair / Your teeth / -- things that occur when someone gets older.

Your knife will fall out of its sheath / -- this is a very clever line, alluding to someone unable to get an erection; the sheath is the condom.

This is a very clever song, and one of my favorites.

All of us will grow old while having our hearts broke, dreams lost, and all of that but it's not cool to off yourself.

Obviously.

What I love about Cake are the metaphors. .. ok ... and to the naked eye, the seemingly sensless dribble of lyrics ...

This is one of my favorite songs on the new cd.

Maybe I just feel like my life right now is like end of the movie ... where you obviously dont want to sit around and watch the credits roll, but imma tough survivor so I sit and watch it all go down to the very last. After all, Have we loved if we havent lost? Have we lived if we havent stuck it out to the very end?

life is like a movie. like watching a movie, everything happens in front of your eyes, but you can interfere. you are the main character in your own movie, and because the movie is your life, you want to (or you have to) watch it til the end.

This song is so short and beautiful. I'm glad they didn't try and stretch it out to a three-minute song or something, because although I always feel like it ends so quickly, that's one of the things I love about it.

I think it's pretty clear that it's about suicide, or more specifically, the lack thereof. I find the verb choice kind of eerie, though: "People you love WILL turn their backs on you". It's like he's TELLING you that this will happen to you. And it's said as a certainty: that this is just a fact of life.

"Your life's going to go to complete shit someday, but you're gonna put up with it anyway to see how it plays out." (to me this is the message the song conveys, but somehow pulls it off in a quiet and hopeful way :P)

All I know is, if I ever contemplate suicide, or know someone who is, I'm playing this song.

I think definitely this song is about how all throughout your life bad things are going to happen to you but that stuff is not what defines you. You don't like to leave before a movie ends, that is something that is you on the inside it doesn't change just because bad things are happening to you.

I thought this might possibly talk about the few people who want to sit through the entire credits at the movies. They consider leaving before that, "leaving before the end of the movie." Since such behavior is generally looked down upon ("What the hell are you doing staring at text scroll up?"), you might develop strained relationships with fellow moviegoers as a result.

I think it's about watching all your affairs fall apart, but still being curious to see how things turn out rather than just throwing in the towel.

i wholeheartedly agree. i think it reallly is a song about perseverance. In spite of all the shit that happens to you, you insist on staying alive (not leaving before the end of the movie (clearly a life metaphor.) All in all, very cool and weirdly touching.
