i'm not so sure i see this song so much as a love song as i do a song about love lost for reasons beyond the control of either person involved.

that is, at least, the way it happened to me.

really, his only fault was not fitting anywhere into my life but just like in the song, that much was okay. i think it's about the sort of hopeless longing that comes at a relationship's end and how rules and reason have no effect on your heart and you want more than anything to just spend the night in your ex-lover's arms.

Those lyrics are just wonderful.

Actually, I think this song is about the 'tension' that could occur before an actual relationship. While I do understand a little bit how you could think it's about a lover longing for what was.... I could also see it as a woman truly enamored with a man, whom she wants to be with. Simple as that. However, the uncertainties of friends, and the man, does make it rather.. complicated.

In the beginning she affirms her affection for him:"'Cause I can't get you off of my mind" and then continues it throughout the song. Next, she introduces her potential desires to make a relationship out of it:

"I've been thinking everyday about you Don't fit anywhere into my life, but that's okay 'Cause I think I might be right for you"

• She's sees it as a possibility in the future.

"And because of that, I'm not scared at all And everyone says I'm crazy And everyone says I'm a fool Would you meet me by the water tonight? 'Cause I'm ready to break all the rules"

• She's obviously not in fear of heartbreak despite what her other friends may been telling her. "Break all the rules" signifies her desire to change his view of her- from a friend to a lover.

"Please don't leave me standing with my heart in my hand."

• Great line. Really shows her desperation for him to return his affection.

"I can't last here. I'm breaking down, and no one understands why I got here. But I knew from the very first moment that I met you. You'd be the one" -She's stuck on this guy, she can't understand why she cares for him, yet how no one else gets it.

"Would you meet me by the water tonight? Would you please fall asleep holding my hand? 'Cause I've got everything in store for you, baby If you'll be my man " -Once again, restating her longing to actually be with this man.

i think that this means that you are longing for this special person.. "dont fit anywhere into my life, btu thats ok" that theres no room for him in her life.. prolly cuz she lives far away but it doesnt matter.. she will make room.. and there rules because if they live far they cant meet but "she is willign to break all the rules." thsi song is just amazingg

I love this song, I think the meaning behind it is pretty simple.

She's falling fast for a man, and she's risking the possibility of a heartbreak, because she can't keep her feelings inside any longer, so she's taking a chance, and saying "if you'll meet me you'll be my man, but please don't "leave me standing with my heart in my hand" so, she's saying please don't break my heart and leave my standing here, because I can't stand it anymore.

Rachael is so great, this album happenstance is one of my favorite albums from the 2000's era so far. This song is so charming in the most calming way. It also has a sad overtone that if being honest makes me teary eyed. I think the meaning is obviously about a broken relationship or on the verge of maybe. Maybe it's best not to look into meanings to deep all the time. All I know I've spend a lot of time listening to this song and album and for that much thanks to RY. Most music I hear today drives me mad it's so bad, it's very refreshing to hear artists like this.

I just saw her live at the Esplanade in Singapore - she was amazing of course. She explained the meaning behind the song... She was in a relationship but then met another guy (who was also in a relationship). So she rang the other guy up and asked her to meet her. He didn't show up and she said it was for the best in the end.
