October Leaves Lyrics
I stumbled in at 3 a.m.
But you didn't want to
I tried again at half past ten
You still don't want to
Your hips have this way of saying no way
An impenetrable barricade
Something I said? Something I did?
What's made you so defensive?
Something you heard? Something you learned?
The season's changing, it's for the worse
You used to call me on your break
But you've been so busy
You used to bring me tomato soup
But you keep forgetting
As the groundskeeper rakes up the October leaves
It occurs to me, trees can't hide anything
Something I said? Something I did?
You've been acting so distant
Something you heard? Something you learned?
The trees are barren, the leaves have turned
The days when we made it the world was green
Now autumn has fallen, everything's changed
October leaves
I woke up this morning
You were off to work
No kisses, no coffee
No morning paper
"Hey"
"Yes?"
"Are you sleeping?"
"No"
"Can I ask you something?"
"Yes"
"Are you cheating on me?"
"No"
"Are you lying?"
But you didn't want to
I tried again at half past ten
You still don't want to
Your hips have this way of saying no way
An impenetrable barricade
What's made you so defensive?
Something you heard? Something you learned?
The season's changing, it's for the worse
But you've been so busy
You used to bring me tomato soup
But you keep forgetting
As the groundskeeper rakes up the October leaves
It occurs to me, trees can't hide anything
You've been acting so distant
Something you heard? Something you learned?
The trees are barren, the leaves have turned
Now autumn has fallen, everything's changed
October leaves
You were off to work
No kisses, no coffee
No morning paper
"Yes?"
"Are you sleeping?"
"No"
"Can I ask you something?"
"Yes"
"Are you cheating on me?"
"No"
"Are you lying?"

this song is great. tim kasher has such a way with words. i think it's pretty obvious that he's talking about his girlfriend or something of the sort becoming distant as the autumn comes. when he talkes about "the days when we made it the world was green", he means that they were together and happy during the summer, and now that it's fall, things are changing. although this song is sad, autumn is a beautiful time of year.
this song is so sad..I feel awful for his ex wife,he certainly documents their breakup quite well.
It is so sad.
My favorite part is the very end dialogue.
-"Hey." -"Yes?" -"Are you sleeping?" -"No." -"Can I ask you something?" -"Yes." -"Are you cheating on me?" -"No." -"Are you lying?"
The girl's voice when she says "Are you lying?" just kills me. It's rather haunting, I must say.
i agree, tim uses his words so well. so much emotion in this song. i like how he uses instances you can relate to whether it be when a significant other used to call you on their breaks or bring you tomato soup.
I agree with Aurey, the girl at the end makes me sad because you can imagine someone saying that exact same shit the second you're hearing it.
Shame everyone is a fucking whore.
It is pretty obvious what this song is about, focusing on the bitter divorce between Tim and his wife, which much of his songs do. I love the metaphor in this with Autumn and how much change is brought about with that season. CountMyCrows, I believe you take the song a little too literally, when it is meant to be more metaphoric. But everyone has their different views. Either way, excellent, although heartbreaking, song by a wonderful band.
Also, I must say, I prefer the acoustic version of this song.
"I woke up this morning You'd already gone There's no pot of coffee You must've forgot..." =(
OOOH wouldn´t anyone please send the acoustic verison to me? Just let me now if you have it and I´ll give you my mail. I used to have that version, which I prefer also, but I kinda lost it :/
this is one of my favorite songs on the album. i love the way he says, "Something I said? Something I did?"
I am going through this exact situation right now.
