Oceanwalk Lyrics
18, 97, 33, 64, 36, 77, 433, 18, 94, 20, 277, 13, 765, 40, 43...
40 steps to the end of the private lives
54 steps on to the upturned hand
233 steps towards the hidden garden
527 steps to the lion’s mountain
184 steps to the etching box
376 steps to the walking planks
433 steps to the watchtower on the sea
17 steps down to the beach
I saw the door and I looked through the entrance
Stare down night sky, dark patterns seeming endless
Broken friendship, dandy dog on leash
Door latch caught spot, shoe stomp on street
Tape deck plays, and the reels would spin
Suburb's sound close down as boom-bap begin
My red face high in the shade of the trees
As buggered blue moonlight passed through the leaves
Carry out my concerning deeds in the deprivation and the darkness
The com-com-comfort of a cave-dweller locked inside an apartment
I spark this with the marked mistakes of a minor learning
How to build a better book of matches by watching the fire burning
Count all my dreams on a pair of Pinocchio fingers
And trace the trail back home by the tumbling splinters
A silly beginner, basic apprentice aggression
In the absence of a master, trying to make up my own lesson
Who knew I would wait
I would wait such a long time?
Who knew I would wait
I would wait such a long time?
From the dreams to the leaves
To the cracks in the pavement
To the roaches and rats
To the armored-car's pacing
From the spies to the thieves
To the cross-eyed complainers, to the...
Ain't that long when you count out the paces
From the breach to the tracks
To the alias' statements
To the grief
To the crap that they all want to wade into
The forth and back
The forth and back
There's no turning back
And back
And back
And back again
Secrets explode whether you mean it or not
I locked my dreams with the right keys, but I worked the wrong locks
The strong box screws split quick before I could retighten
I learned lightning strikes and leaves before language leaks "it lightens"
The waking of the dead to live and work with the freaks
I was a vampire roaming streets, when I'd have swears I 'as asleep
The beeping of the buzzer burn my brain the next day
I tried to brush my teeth, but never could remove the blood stains
A double life of moonlighting grows tiring from trying
If you got to work a day job, and keep the villagers from rioting
The list of lies lengthened longer, left life, laymen, honest
Invited the world into my home to show the bones stacked in my closet
A dumb little skeleton walking miles to chase a silly dream
Stubborn skull, split shoes, punctuated by abrasive feet
All the while stalking, walking awkward through the night
In the stomach of the suburbs with a dog by my side
From the dreams to the leaves
To the cracks in the pavement
To the roaches and rats
To the armored-car's pacing
From the spies to the thieves
To the cross-eyed complainers, to the...
Ain't that long when you count out the paces

i believe that's what he says at the very beginning, just before these lyrics start. i'm not that sure about "upturned hand." i know it's 'upturned'-something. and i could be wrong about "etching box." but these are my best guesses. these things and places sound beautiful.
I am from his hometown: jacksonville, fl. I actually grew up in a neighborhood called Oceanwalk. He probably grew up there because kids from there went to Fletcher HIgh, his high school. SO i think this song is about the neighborhood
40 steps to the end of the private lives (end of where the houses are) 54 steps on to the upturned hand (not really sure... maybe the huge sabal palm) 133 steps towards the hidden garden (there was a garden hidden in the pool area 527 steps to the lions mountain (I'm guessing this is the end of the street that ran adjacent to the neighborhood. he trees opened up around in kind of like a cave, or a mouth.) 184 steps to the etching box (this was the brick wall that had "Oceanwalk" etched in it") 376 steps to the walking planks (the boardwalk) 433 steps to the watchtower on the sea (end of the boardwalk where you could look across the coastline) 17 steps down to the beach (kind of an obvious one here. but 17 sounds more like during high tide there)
Astronautalis is amazing, his music is kind of hard to categorize, but it's just brilliant.
i've decided that this is "the song" of my life. about the good things, the bad things but you keep on going even just counting out the steps to the next good experience or bad but you just have to keep going. everything turns out ok.
This song is about him teaching himself how to rap while walking his dog (a soft-coated wheaten terrier named Dolly) through "the mean streets of Atlantic Beach, Florida."
Straight from the man's mouth.
A freakin' great song. It is kind of unfortunate no one has commented on any of his songs on here. Regardless, this is such a good song and I think it is really meaningful to Astronautalis and it really evokes a lot of memory, even if you didn't write it.
I learned lightening strikes and leaves before language leaks "it lightens"
wow
indeed this is a brilliant song. when i heard it performed live i was blown away...
is anyone else from jacksonville then? i wish i knew him but it is cool to hear his lyrics about different places around the city. here he's talking about jacksonville beach and it's awesome to be there with his music playing. and in meet me here later he talks about third street... it's so cool, because nobody has even heard of this place and finally theres somebody who identifies with me. =]
Absolutely phenomenal. Has stayed in the back of my mind as one of my favourite songs for a long time now.. whenever I hear it, I'm blown away.
